The School of Science at Hampton University invites applications for the Chairperson of the Department of Mathematics as a tenure-track, nine-month faculty, Assistant or Associate Professor. The Department of Mathematics offers programs leading to the Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics and the Master of Science degree in Applied Mathematics. The Mathematics Department at Hampton University (HU) hosts the Center for Fusion Research and Training (CFRT). The CFRT is the first and only fusion research and training center at an HBCU in the nation and the Commonwealth of Virginia. The research in the CFRT is focused on applied mathematics research in fusion science and on the application of nonlinear dynamics to fusion. The mission of the Department of Mathematics is to teach, challenge, and encourage our students to think both deeply and broadly; To enable our students to develop a mastery of reasoning and analytic processes, problem-solving, and critical thinking and become lifelong learners; To prepare our majors for a career in private industry, government-industry, and graduate studies; To provide our majors with opportunities for advanced study and research in mathematics and related fields, and applications of mathematical methods to real-world problems; To prepare secondary school teachers with a strong mathematics foundation and a mastery of effective teaching strategies; To create an environment for our faculty to grow, deliver state-of-the-art instruction, and conduct world-class research.
Duties and Responsibilities
The chairperson serves as the administrative officer responsible for developing the department's short- and long-range plans and recruiting and selecting qualified faculty. The chairperson also evaluates faculty to determine their quality of performance for promotion, tenure, retention, and salary increment recommendations; encourages faculty to engage in research and other scholarly activities and to publish scholarly works; maintains a viable and competitive program; maintains a personal involvement in research, teaching, and professional development activities; obtain external funds through personal initiative as well as through assisting faculty in writing proposals and carrying out research, and serve as an ambassador of the university to faculty, students and the society-at-large.
Qualifications
The successful candidate with a Ph.D. in Mathematics should have an excellent record of teaching, research productivity, grant activity, service, and leadership experience.

The department's chairperson is both an administrator and faculty member and is expected to provide effective leadership in both roles.
