Position Summary

The Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences at the College of Veterinary Medicine, Michigan State University, invites applications for a Tenure System (TS) or a multi-year renewable Health Programs (HP) Faculty Appointment position in Comparative Ophthalmology at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor, depending on qualifications and experience.

The role of the successful applicant will encompass clinical service, education, and research/scholarly activity. The amount of time dedicated to each of these endeavors is flexible and will be geared towards the interests, strengths, and qualifications of the applicant. Tenure System appointments require a greater percentage of time dedicated to both independent and collaborative, externally funded research, with less time devoted to clinical service. More information about the Tenure System is available at Tenure System Hiring Information (msu.edu

). Health Programs (HP) appointments are unique to Michigan State University and are predicated on the need to enhance programs in clinical education, patient care services and clinical research. Health Programs (HP) appointments emphasize clinical service and teaching, although these positions are flexible to allow ample time for research and scholarly activity. Both Tenure System and Health Programs (HP) appointments are expected to contribute to preclinical and clinical education of veterinary students, interns, and residents. Health Programs (HP) faculty appointed in the Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences typically have 50-70% clinical assignments devoted to clinical and pre-clinical instruction, patient care services, and the general administrative efforts of the Department and College. In addition, Health Programs (HP) faculty are expected to be active in research and other scholarly endeavors. A complete description of the Michigan State University HP system is available at Health Programs Faculty Appointment System Handbook (msu.edu).

The successful candidate will be integral to the continuing excellence of the Comparative Veterinary Ophthalmology service at Michigan State University and will join an existing team of three full-time faculty (2 ACVO diplomates and 1 ECVO diplomate) in ophthalmology, 3 residents and 2 VOTS nurses. The ophthalmology caseload is high volume and diverse. In addition to dogs, cats and horses, the service sees a large variety of exotic species and wildlife from zoos throughout the state. The Veterinary Medical Center (VMC) is a modern, fully equipped facility with extensive therapeutic and diagnostic equipment. The VMC provides outstanding, dedicated veterinary technician support and superb facilities, including in excess of 30 examination rooms (4 devoted to ophthalmology), 12 operating suites (1 dedicated to ophthalmology), an intensive/critical care unit, a nursing unit, a complete diagnostic imaging and a radiation therapy facility. The Ophthalmology Service is complemented by a state-of-the-art diagnostic suite containing numerous imaging (2 digital video indirect headsets, RetCam video ophthalmoscope) and ultrasound modalities, in addition to, electrodiagnostic/OCT equipment (Roland Consult). Furthermore, the service has access to a 64-slice helical CT scanner and a 1.5 Tesla MRI (new 3T unit is on order). Within the college, the MSU Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory has a comparative ocular pathology service with in-house access to a broad range of techniques including digital imaging, immunohistochemistry, in situ hybridization, laser capture microdissection, PARR testing, and (soon) next generation sequencing capabilities. Collaborative research opportunities and access to animal models of glaucoma and various retinal diseases are available through the well-funded, extensively equipped comparative ophthalmology laboratories.

Applicants must have a DVM/VMD (or equivalent degree). Must be eligible for licensure to practice veterinary medicine in Michigan, including a Clinical Academic Limited license and Controlled Substance license. The appointment requires board certification, or eligibility for certification, by the American Board of Veterinary Ophthalmologists. The candidate should have excellent communication skills and the ability to work cooperatively with other faculty and staff. Outstanding clinical service and surgical skills in veterinary ophthalmology, outreach, consultation, and case management are also expected. Applicants interested in the tenure system appointment should have a track record of training and experience in hypothesis-driven science, preferably with evidence of independence to include extramural funding.
