The role of Lead Teacher for the Burlington City & Lake Semester (BCL) is complex and multifaceted, combining aspects of classroom teaching and facilitation, program administration, advising, partnership development, and community-building.
In the 2021-22 school year, this position has two primary components: Lead Teacher for the Burlington City & Lake Semester (BCL) program, and helping grow Deeper Learning / Flexible Pathways initiatives, grades 7-12.
The Essential Functions of this position include:
Designing units: EQs, themes, pedagogy, etc. and leading lessons, experiences, units.
Planning and scheduling experiences
Booking and managing partners
Choosing prep assignments/reading
Designing homework assignments
Facilitating/Leading experiences, reflection and meaning-making
Leading small groups
Organizing and leading “crews” (advising, coaching, liaising with Student Supports and/or families, organizing and leading “Contributions”)
Organizing and supporting the facilitation of Morning Meeting.
Logistics: Making travel arrangements, organizing lunch, facilities and clean-up/room set-up
Designing and planning outcomes, assessment tools, and systems to ensure authentic student-centered, PBL assessment in line with BHS GXs
Revising and maintaining BCL Assessment Maps
Introducing BCL assessment to students
Coaching and guiding the BCL faculty to ensure assessment coherence
Giving formative feedback
Summative grading (Weekly Expos, Inquiry Projects, 1-on-1 self-assessment process, etc.)
Inquiry Project coaching
Facilitating weekly Circle __ Restorative Practice
Ongoing collaboration with the BCL Team, including Meetings, Program design-work, Networking and sharing excitement about BCL
Liaising with BHS/BSD Administration (BCL program issues, student needs, BHS schedule, etc.)
Liaising with Student Supports (Special Ed, EL, etc.)
Liaise as needed with BEA
Keep BHS Faculty informed about BCL in department and faculty meetings, emails, etc.
Outward-facing communication (e.g., writing blog posts , newsletters, press releases, etc.
Maintaining the BCL website
Lead and support the BCL Team’s Circle practice, internal PD, and collaborative leadership
Partnering with students __ Internal (Inviting ongoing input about BCL program from students / Incorporating alumni as stakeholders in BCL ongoing evolution))
Partnering with students - External (Convening BCL students and alumni to support student-centered initiatives in the BSD and in the broader community)
An additional .2 FTE will be devoted to supporting flexible pathways initiatives, 7-12, and to moving Deeper Learning from the margins to the center. The approach to this work will be asset-based, investing in and offering more resources, connections, and energy to individuals, groups, and programs that are prime for expansion. When/where it is relevant, this role can support efforts to pilot new initiatives. The key efforts are connecting and investing in order to see this work grow.

Assisting the BHS Instructional Coach’s efforts to support BHS SDI participants’ implementation of their Deeper Learning units
Sustaining existing Deeper Learning / Flexible Pathways Programs (e.g., BCL), and helping create the conditions for the growth of additional programs and opportunities
Making Deeper Learning more visible (telling the story, inviting others to tell the story, etc.)
The required education and experience of this position include:
Education:
Minimum Required: Bachelor’s Degree
Preferred: Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree with a concentration in Education
Certification Required: Vermont State Educator’s License with appropriate Endorsement
Experience:
Minimum Required:
5 years of teaching or equivalent experience
Experience working in non-traditional educational programs
SALARY:
As per the Master Agreement between the Burlington Board of School Commissioners and the Burlington Education Association.
