Job Description

Title: Literacy Tutor - 1.0 FTE - Noyes

Reports to: Principal

Position Summary: To assist students needing additional support in developing literacy skills and competencies in grades K–5.

Key Duties & Responsibilities:

-Provides comprehensive and specialized literacy instruction to individual or small groups of

struggling readers based on student weaknesses and needs reflecting established district and

state standards;

-Implements Tier 2 interventions utilizing Fountas and Pinnell Leveled Literacy Intervention

program or other research based reading intervention programs;

-Works collaboratively with Literacy Specialist to form flexible groups based on students’

changing needs to ensure best practices;

-Consults with classroom teachers and special educators to monitor students’ progress or areas

of concern and collaborates on reinforcing concepts taught in classroom;

-Plans and prepares necessary lesson materials for all grades, including writing lesson plans,

preparing enrichment activities, and modifying curriculum;

-Screens all kindergarten, first grade, and other students referred to the Literacy Center

program;

-Assists in administering reading assessments for students across all grades, using measures

such as Fountas and Pinnell Benchmark Assessment System and DIBELS to determine the

deficits and strengths of students;

-Documents, analyzes and tracks data to monitor student progress;

-Prepares and maintains individual records of current and previous literacy students;

-Participates in IST meetings, as well as evaluation data share meetings with SPED department

for students on caseload, compiling student’s work for review and observation, providing

critical information necessary to design a plan to ensure student success;

-Maintains a positive and collaborative working relationship with classroom teachers and

Literacy Specialist;

-Participates in on-going training and professional development in the area of literacy;

-Consults with parents at conferences or by email and telephone, as needed;

-Maintains a high level of professionalism and confidentiality;

-Performs other job related duties as assigned by the Principal or designee.

Job Requirements

Qualifications:

Meets the Department of Education Guidelines for Highly Qualified Paraprofessionals which includes:

High School diploma or equivalent and an Associate’s (or higher) degree;

OR

Completion of 48 credit hours at an Institution of Higher Education;

OR

Completion of one of the formal Massachusetts-endorsed Assessments: Parapro or WorkKeys;

-Bachelor’s degree preferred;

-Prior experience working with children;

-Background or experience in literacy support;

-Flexible attitude and works well in teams.

Classification: ESPAS Level 9 Unit Position

Schedule: 1.0 FTE Citizenship, residency or work VISA in United States required
