Job Description:

The Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, offering the B.Sc. in Geology and B.Sc. in Environmental Science, invites applications for a 1-year Visiting Assistant Professor in the field of earth science, to begin fall 2023. The successful candidate will teach a subset of courses in the following topics: earth materials, structural geology and tectonics, field geology, GIS, applied geophysics, environmental geology, and introductory geology. The successful candidate will also contribute to the mentoring of student research projects and departmental service.

The department has four full-time faculty positions. Currently there are 5 geology and 40 environmental science majors. Department faculty members are generalists by necessity but have research areas of expertise that include sedimentology and stratigraphy, fluvial and coastal geomorphology, glacial geology, Quaternary paleoclimate and paleoecology, freshwater ecosystems, and geoarchaeology.

Located in the middle of the Green Mountains, the department has direct access to and fully supports field-based learning. Faculty members are expected to maintain active research that includes undergraduates when appropriate; all department seniors conduct research mentored by faculty. The department houses extensive field equipment and XRD, SEM, and ICP instrumentation, all supported by a department technician.

Professional travel funding and competitive internal research and publication expense grants are available to all faculty.

Requirements:

A Ph.D. in the earth sciences or related field (ABD considered); a strong commitment to the education of undergraduates in the arts, sciences and engineering (prior teaching experience at the college level is preferred).
