Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs
Position Summary
The Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs (SADAA) has oversight responsibility and leadership for the educational programs of the College, including baccalaureate courses of the college, the CHM Medical Student Program, Graduate Medical Education, Continuing Medical Education, and any Graduate Programs with direct reporting lines to the College.
I. Pre-Matriculation Programs
The Advanced Baccalaureate Learning Experience (ABLE) is a partially-federally sponsored program offering conditional admission to students from disadvantaged backgrounds as long as they meet academic expectations in a pre-matriculation year of study. This program is administered by the Assistant Deans for Admissions and Clinical Programs, and historically by the Director of the Center of Excellence (another federally sponsored program). Programmatic oversight is a responsibility of the SADAA and on the governance side, the Admissions Committee and Curriculum Committee.
Pathway programs are a core part of the College’s diversity mission and are supported through the Admissions office in collaboration with Student Affairs.
Early Assurance Programs are partnerships between the college and four-year colleges in the college’s communities.
II. Graduate Programs
Graduate programs are sponsored by the College and are primarily under the auspices of departments (e.g., Masters in Epidemiology), programs (e.g., Masters in Public Health), and dual degree programs. College-level oversight for these programs is a responsibility of the SADAA, who works with Departments, Program Directors and the Dean of the Graduate School to facilitate all related academic and support issues.
III. CHM Medical Student Program
The SADAA assumes oversight responsibility for the CHM Medical Student program. This responsibility in part is discharged through Assistant and Associate Deans: for admissions, for clinical programs, for Undergraduate Medical Education, and for Student Affairs and Services. The SADAA assumes primary responsibility for the budget and space that relate to these three programs, for assuring appropriate levels of faculty support, for quality and standards and policies that relate to these, and through the assistant deans, for implementation and periodic programmatic review.
The SADAA provides appropriate oversight for the development and implementation of curricular and other academic policies affecting the curriculum carried out in the distributed community campuses.
The SADAA provides ultimate oversight, responsibility and authority for any College-level curricular elements (ie. modules, courses, clerkships) which bear HM prefixes.
The SADAA provides ultimate oversight, responsibility and authority for College level assessments of medical students and for evaluations of academic programs run by the College.
The SADAA is responsible for and has authority over the medical student data base (design, oversight, reporting policies), and through the College Records Officer for maintenance of student records and for policies dealing with reports to outside agencies (e.g. AAMC, licensure authorities).
The SADAA assumes oversight responsibility for medical student curriculum review, development, and implementation across the College. To discharge this responsibility, the SADAA serves as an ex-officio member of the College Curriculum Committee and is a member of its Executive Committee which is responsible for charging the Curriculum Committee and for setting its agenda.
The SADAA assumes oversight responsibility for the academic standards of the student programs of the College. To discharge this responsibility the SADAA serves as an ex-officio member of the College Student Performance Committee (SPC) relating to the legacy curriculum and for relating to its chair to set the agenda for the business functions of the Committee (as opposed to its function to conduct reinstatement hearings). The office of the SADAA is responsible for staffing the SPC. The SADAA has responsibility for providing, either directly or through delegation, academic information about students who appear before the Committee at reinstatement hearings.
The SADAA assumes oversight responsibility for the admissions function for the medical student program of the College. This responsibility is delegated to the Assistant Dean for Admissions, who serves as an ex-officio member of the Admissions Committee, and whose office staffs the CHM Admissions Committee. The SADAA periodically meets with and sets direction for the Admissions Committee, working in conjunction with the Dean and with the Assistant Dean for Admissions.
The SADAA assumes primary responsibility for relating to key external agencies and bodies (e.g. AAMC, LCME, NBME ) on behalf of the Dean, as related to the medical student program and/or curriculum and graduate programs of the College.
The SADAA provides liaison with other university units for purposes of furthering the educational programs of the College. These include relating to his/her counterpart(s) in the College of Osteopathic Medicine and participating with his/her counterparts in the health professions colleges to facilitate planning for educational space, and for libraries and technology.
IV. The SADAA assumes oversight of the college’s sponsored GME program and oversight of the affiliated residency relationships with partnering institutions.
V. The SADAA assumes oversight of the college’s CME program.
VI. Other Responsibilities
In order to coordinate responsibilities related to curriculum, program and students with other Dean’s Office functions, the SADAA serves as a member of the Dean’s staff and of the Community Deans Group.
The SADAA serves as the Dean’s and College representative to selected community boards and corporations.
