The Vice President for Information Technology (VPIT) will lead Hampton University’s Center for Information Technology and chair the Information Technology Advisory Committee. Charged with the effective delivery of high-quality IT services to the University, this role will encompass all technology supporting its research and educational mission. The VPIT will lead the development and implementation of the University’s IT strategy, providing leadership and guidance to research, academic, and business units reporting to the President. The role requires an individual with a strong background in technology, excellent leadership and management skills, and the ability to collaborate effectively with other university leaders to ensure that technology is aligned with the University’s missions and goals.
This position is responsible for identifying, managing, and securing funding for Hampton’s technology operations. The role will lead a team of IT professionals focused on IT support, web design, and services, IT Help Desk, network services, Computer Center operations, Enterprise programming services and support, technical media productions and events, and Blackboard learning management system. The position will recommend opportunities to leverage shared University resources and provide guidance in developing new and improved IT services that enhance cost savings and empower world-class research and education.
Duties and Responsibilities
Develop and implement a strategic plan for the university's information technology infrastructure, including hardware, software, networking, and other systems that support research, academic, and business operations.
Serve as a key member of the university IT senior leadership team and a thought leader in the broader HU community.
Provide leadership and guidance to the university's technology staff, including hiring, training, and supervising staff members.
Manage teams that support the day-to-day IT operations to include: Storage, Email, Active Directory, Certificates, Back-Ups, Architecture, Security, Disaster Recovery, Standards, Purchasing, and Service Provision.
Collaborates closely with other university leaders to ensure the technology is aligned with the university's mission and goals and prioritize the technology investments.
Support the university's professional staff and end users to provide a system compatible with current or new specific hardware and applications.
Develop and maintain partnerships with external organizations to enhance the university's technology offerings and infrastructure.
Prepare and present technology initiatives and reports findings to senior management.
Manage data driven timelines, scope, budgets, and vendor relationships to ensure projects are delivered with the highest quality and within specified timeframes, realizing benefits.
Oversee the development and implementation of technology policies and procedures, ensuring they align with best practices and legal requirements.
Manage the university's technology budget, ensuring that the resources are allocated appropriately and that expenditures align with the university's financial goals.
Stay up-to-date with emerging trends and best practices in technology, and provide leadership and guidance to the university's technology staff in implementing new technologies.
Collaborate with faculty and staff to support technology integration in teaching, learning, and research activities.
Cultivate a culture of personal responsibility and accountability.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field; Master’s degree preferred.
Minimum ten years’ experience in a leadership role within an information technology setting; able to lead complex projects.
Demonstrated experience developing and implementing strategic plans, managing budgets, and supervising staff.
Excellent communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills.
Strong knowledge of information tools and systems, including enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems, cyber security, networking, and cloud computing.
Ability to work collaboratively with other university leaders and staff members from diverse backgrounds and to balance the needs of research, academic, student, and business units.
Desired Technical and Soft Skills:
Experience in higher education and administrative systems is required; Experience in Ellucian Banner system and Blackboard LMS is a plus.
Strong written, verbal, and presentation skills.
Able to support ongoing communications with users and executive management on technical information services and systems.
Working knowledge of Oracle RDBMS and Application Server, PL/SQL, Solaris, Red Hat Linux, WordPress, Cisco, and (or) Java technologies.
Skilled in managing security issues.
