Organization overview:
Founded in 1994, Silent Spring Institute is the nation’s leading scientific research organization dedicated to uncovering the environmental causes of breast cancer and other disease, with a focus on prevention. Our groundbreaking studies produce new knowledge about the health risks associated with cancer-causing chemicals where we live, work, and play. Since the Institute’s founding, our science and scientific leadership have played a pivotal role in strengthening policies to protect consumers from dangerous chemicals, empowering communities to take action to reduce their exposures, and making breast cancer prevention a national research priority.
Job overview:
Silent Spring Institute is hiring a study coordinator for a major study of health effects associated with PFAS exposures from drinking water in two communities in Massachusetts. This is a full-time position (around 15 months) with effort initially focused in Hyannis, MA, and expanding to include Ayer, MA, in summer 2022. The study is part of the PFAS Multi-Site Health Study, funded and coordinated by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Silent Spring is partnering with the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, Eastern Research Group, and community partner organizations. The results of this study will be combined with results from six other states. This is an exciting opportunity to play a critical role in a major public health study that will advance our understanding of PFAS health effects.
Responsibilities:
Play a leadership role on a nationally-recognized, multidisciplinary team as we investigate the health effects that may occur in communities with a history of PFAS drinking water contamination.
Contribute to and oversee recruitment of 1,300 participants (adults and children) and data collection in field offices in Hyannis and Ayer.
Implement standardized techniques for collecting biospecimens, body measurements, and interview data and train research staff on study protocols.
Conduct interviews and neurobehavioral assessments with study participants.
Oversee data management in REDCap and implementation of data entry protocols.
Assist the principal investigator with updating human research ethics approvals and writing progress reports. Opportunity to contribute to writing manuscripts and developing presentations for diverse scientific, policy, and lay audiences.
Coordinate regular communications and meetings among members of the study team and with community advisory boards, and help organize community events.
Responsibilities will include some evenings and weekends.
