at the University of Montana seek applicants for a nine-month, tenure-track
Assistant Professor of Quantitative Ecology
to begin fall 2022. We seek a research scientist who applies and develops innovative quantitative approaches to advance understanding and/or management of ecological systems in either the terrestrial or aquatic realm. Because the FCFC and Wildlife Biology Program are committed to increasing the diversity of our profession, we particularly welcome applicants who will help us diversify the leadership in our programs.

The UM Wildlife Biology Program has been ranked as the top wildlife program in North America based on the research productivity of our faculty. We comprise highly interactive and collaborative faculty with outstanding records of scholarship and training in basic and applied wildlife biology, with both terrestrial and aquatic emphases. We are a broad, interdisciplinary program between the FCFC, Department of Ecosystem and Conservation Sciences (DECS), the Division of Biological Sciences, and the USGS Montana Cooperative Wildlife Research Unit ( www.cfc.umt.edu/wbio
Specific Responsibilities Include:
Develop a vigorous, externally-funded research program
Teach a combination of undergraduate and graduate courses linking the expertise of the candidate and needs of the program, approximately 9 credits a year
(~3 courses). Specific courses taught are flexible, but potential courses could include: WILD 470
Conservation of Wildlife Populations; WILD 240
Intro to Biostatistics; WILD 370
Wildlife Habitat Conservation & Mgmt; BIOE 370
General Ecology; WILD 571
Estimation of Demographic Parameters, and/or graduate course(s) of candidate’s choice
Advise undergraduate students in the Wildlife Biology Program and direct graduate student research in Wildlife Biology at the M.S. and Ph.D. levels
Participate in Wildlife Biology, DECS, FCFC, and University service committees
Broaden participation of members of underrepresented groups, engage diverse groups through research, teaching, and public engagement, and exhibit skill in using pedagogical techniques designed to meet the needs of individuals with diverse backgrounds, learning styles, and intellectual interests.
Required Qualifications:
A Ph.D. in Wildlife Biology, Fisheries or Fish Ecology, Ecology, Biostatistics, or related field of study at the time of appointment
A strong record of research and scholarship in the field of quantitative ecology, including publications in peer-reviewed journals
Experience and strong commitment to excellence in teaching
Ability to effectively mentor students from diverse and non-traditional backgrounds
A proven ability to communicate effectively with students, professionals, and the general public
Ability to work collegially with students, staff, faculty, and external stakeholders
Ability to support and strengthen justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion
Preferred Qualifications:
Post-doctoral research experience and training
Successful development of competitive externally-funded grants
