The Sustainability Academy is the country's first elementary school focused entirely on Education for Sustainability (EFS), located in the Old North End of Burlington, Vermont. At SA, we define sustainability as the shared responsibility for improving the quality of life for all—economically, socially, and environmentally—now and for future generations. We are looking for classroom teachers who are excited about the rich and complex opportunities that exist when using sustainability as a framework for learning in a vibrant and diverse community and who want to join a fun school full of great teachers.
At SA, the grade 5 teacher will
Create and maintain a safe and respectful learning environment, rooted in relationship, with students from all backgrounds and abilities;
Collaborate with the Sustainability Coach and teaching team to integrate (EFS) into all aspects of the school day, including literacy and math blocks;
Explore and develop place-based education;
Support students in developing a sense of self as powerful collaborators and changemakers in our community;
Instruct students in activities designed to promote their social, intellectual, and physical growth and maximize their potential as learners;
Promote personal & collective growth and development;
Align with state curriculum standards;
Collect and report on correct and detailed records of student performance.
The essential functions of this position include:
Create a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity & interests of the students;
Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of our student population (or a willingness to learn) being served and how demographic variables may impact student achievement and use this knowledge to effectively design and deliver instruction;
Work with District-adopted curriculum (e.g. American Reading Company and Eureka Math) and establish clear objectives for all lessons, units, projects, etc, and communicate these objectives and their purpose to students;
Assess and record learning on an ongoing basis and adjust instruction appropriately;
Collaborate with colleagues to meet the needs of all students, including students with disabilities;
Advise parents and/or legal guardians of student progress for the purpose of communicating expectations; student's achievements; developing methods for improvement and/or reinforcing classroom goals in the home environment.
The required qualifications of this position include:
Education:
Minimum Required: Bachelor of Arts or Science Degree
Certification Required: Vermont teaching certification with endorsement in the assigned area or eligible for Vermont licensure.
Experience:
Minimum Required:
Demonstrated excellence in instruction and content in the assigned area
Proficient in computer applications – word processing, spreadsheets, email, internet, etc;
Familiar with laws and regulations governing education in Vermont;
Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent may find appropriate and acceptable.

Understanding of and/or interest in restorative practices;
Sense of humor and joy in learning;
Willingness to model the flexibility, growth mindset, empathy, and resilience we want for our students.
SALARY:
As per the
Master Agreement
between the Burlington Board of School Commissioners and the Burlington Education Association.
