English Learner Teacher - Middle School

The Burlington School District is seeking an EL teacher to support English Learners at the Middle School level for the balance of the 2021-2022 school year. The ideal candidate will have a Vermont state license in teaching English Learners (also known as ELL, ESL, TESOL) and will have experience in establishing a safe, welcoming, positive learning environment for English Learners. Experience working with students and families from a variety of cultural and linguistic backgrounds is essential. Familiarity with both literacy and mathematics as well as the Common Core and WIDA standards and assessments are also important assets.

Qualifications for the

EL teacher

component of this position:

Required:

Vermont Teaching License in English as a Second Language, or eligible for licensure

Experience teaching school-aged English Learner students, K-12 (including student teaching)

Knowledge of and experience with currently accepted/research-based practices in EL instruction

Evidence of integrating technology into the learning environment

Strong communication skills as evidenced through quality of resume and cover letter

Preferred:

Experience working with students from refugee and SLIFE backgrounds at the secondary or elementary level

Knowledge of or experience with the WIDA English language proficiency standards & assessment program, including experience administering the assessment to students K-12

Knowledge about/experience working with students who have experienced trauma, poverty, and cultural/linguistic as well as physical dislocation

Knowledge of best practices regarding student management

Knowledge or experience with literacy instruction

Knowledge of assessments and use of data to inform instruction

Evidence of strong connection with students and families

Dual licensure in a content area (English, social studies, science, math) or elementary education

Willingness to collaborate and co-teach
