Job Description
Title: Special Education Teacher Assistant
Reports to: Special Education Liaison, Principal and Director of Student Services
Position Summary:
The role of the Special Education Teacher Assistant is to support eligible students with disabilities in an effort
to provide them with physical, instructional and social, emotional support needed for progress toward
Individual Education program Goals under the supervision of a certified teacher. The Special Education
Teaching Assistant will provide these services in the general education classroom, special education
classrooms and settings, and across all school settings as appropriate.
Key Duties & Responsibilities:
May be assigned as 1:1, in an inclusion program, as a general assistant, or in any combination
thereof;
Assignments directed by the Principal and/or the Director of Student Services and may change during
the school year
Work with the special education team and under the direction of special education and/or classroom
teachers to implement strategies, and implement modified assignments to reinforce the learning or
behavior of students as outlined in students IEPs; specific job duties vary across grade levels,
programs, and students’ needs;
Work with students to reinforce learning of material or skills introduced by classroom teachers or
special education staff, as well as mastering adaptive equipment, assistive technology, and
instructional materials in accordance with IEPs;
Support therapeutic strategies and interventions as appropriate;
Assist with supervision of students during non-class time, including, but not limited to, the following:
recess, lunch, passing times, assemblies and school meetings, field trips, transportation, school
arrival and departure, emergency drills, and other situations as deemed appropriate for the grade
level and position;
Participate in in-service training and meetings as well as training programs specific to the students
being served;
Attend to the personal care and hygiene needs of students in accordance with the IEP, as
appropriate;
Facilitate socialization among students;
Foster independence in students on IEPs by assisting them in the routines of school life;
Gather data to document student performance and behavior given the direction of the special
education staff;
As appropriate, provide coverage for special education staff and general classroom teachers so that
they may participate in special education related activities;
Under the direction of special education teachers assist in accumulating information regarding
student’s progress toward IEP objectives which will be communicated to parents by the special
educator
Maintain a high level of confidentiality;
Provides input on students to special educators for potential use in special education meetings;
May be directed to attend State Standardized training and proctor State Standardized tests in
accordance with specific student IEP;
Facilitate small group instruction;
Assist regular education students while working in regular education classroom with students on
IEP’s;
Implement and follow individual student behavior plans determined by team;
Maintain student specific materials and reinforcers;
Report all educational, behavioral or social/emotional concerns or incidents to the special education
liaison of the specific student assigned;;
Ensure the safety of all students and staff;
Perform other job related duties as assigned by the Principal and/or designee, assigned special
education teacher and/or Director of Student Services.
Physical Demands
At times, requires good physical condition in order to support lifting, positioning, and transitioning
students, as needed
Ability to physically support students who utilize specialized equipment such as standers, walkers,
wheelchairs, supportive seating etc. Position Type:

Job Requirements
Qualifications:
-High School diploma or equivalent and an Associate’s (or higher) degree; OR
Completion of 48 credit hours at an Institution of Higher Education; OR
Completion of one of the formal Massachusetts-endorsed Assessments: Parapro or WorkKeys;
-Bachelor’s degree preferred;
-Prior experience working with children;
-Background in special education or experience working with special education students preferred;
-Have a flexible attitude and work well in teams
-Responsive and able to adjust when changes in routine are made
Classification: ESPAS Level 7 Unit Position
Schedule: 1.0 FTE Citizenship, residency or work VISA in United States required
