Job Description
Elementary Special Education Teacher (1.0 FTE): Steps Program Reports to: Principal The Sudbury Public Schools is seeking a skilled, experienced and dynamic special education teacher to lead the Steps Program at Josiah Haynes Elementary School. This teacher should have experience in an elementary school setting along with a degree in special education with Moderate or Severe Disabilities. Key Duties & Responsibilities: INSTRUCTION -- Work with students in an intensive program with developmental disabilities who require a highly individualized and specialized approach to learning and benefit from curriculum modifications in one or more content areas due to Intellectual, Neurological and/or Communication disabilities. Maintain a positive and safe classroom environment through thoughtful behavioral management. Curriculum (academic and pro-social) will be individually modified in an inclusive environment and differentiated on concept instruction and communication modalities. Designs and delivers dynamic instruction that includes use of repetition, kinesthetic experiences, visual aids, brain breaks and practical life skill lessons. Instruction includes both program classroom and general education classroom inclusion. PROGRESS MONITORING -- Communicate with colleagues about student progress, including collaborative planning for adjustments. Develop, implement and monitor positive behavior support plans. Write comprehensive progress reports. Collect and analyze student data against IEP goals. Provide ongoing positive communication with parents. COLLABORATION -- Partner with general education teachers to maximize inclusion opportunities and appropriate accommodations/modifications to grade-level material. Partner with related service providers in support of student progress toward goals. Serve as a member of special education team in support of the IEP process. PROGRAM LEADERSHIP -- Provide program leadership for paraprofessional teaching staff, including instructional coaching and direction. Develop, implement and monitor schedule coordination for both program classroom and general education inclusion learning. Communicate on behalf of program team to colleagues, teams and families. Oversee IEP development and implementation. Prerequisite Skills/Knowledge: Demonstrated success with and be knowledgeable about research-based interventions for children with these disabilities Demonstrated ability to develop positive behavior intervention plans Assistive technology and augmentative communication tools ABA and behavior modification approaches Exceptional communication, organization and proactive problem-solving skills Experience with a diverse range of moderate disabilities and management of a self-contained classroom. Skilled in developing and practicing highly differentiated instruction to meet the needs of a diverse group of learners. Experience in creating multimodal/multisensory lessons. Experience with the administration and interpretation of a wide range of formal and informal diagnostic assessment and evaluation tools Ability to administer ongoing progress monitoring, strategic monitoring and benchmark systems. Experience in Wilson/O-G, EmPOWER Writing Highly-flexible and adaptive Excellent writing and communication skills required Thrives in a highly-collaborative environment Keeps current with contemporary, research-based instructional practices Work Year: 183 days (1.0 FTE) Salary: Commensurate with education and experience based on the terms of the collective bargaining agreement. Job Requirements
Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred
Massachusetts licensure in Moderate or Severe Special Needs 1-6 through the Department of Elementary & Secondary Education
