Profile

Champlain Elementary School, in the Burlington School District seeks: a paraeducator.

The paraeducator position is a unionized, exempt position that will report to the Principal. Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, the paraeducator will assist a certificated teacher in providing instruction to students in an assigned educational program; assist children with meeting the goals and objectives of their Individualized Education Plan (IEP); attend to the physical and health needs of students; monitor and report student progress regarding educational performance; perform a variety of clerical and supportive duties related to classroom activities and classroom management. Responsibilities include communication facilitation, carrying out programs designed by the teaching staff, managing behavior, teaching self-regulation skills, and supporting and facilitating social engagement with peers. Physical responsibilities include lifting, carrying, personal care, and the ability to assess a situation and respond quickly.

The essential functions of this position include

Support the developmental growth of each child:

Facilitate children's engagement in play activities by asking children open-ended questions about their activity and offering suggestions to add more complex materials and ideas.

Facilitate language development by describing to children their activity as well as the adult’s activity as they are happening.

Use motivation/positive behavior management technique

Understand young children, their behaviors, and motivation:

Work Collaboratively with Teaching Team by

Following IEP Objectives and Behavior Plans

Using methods, and materials prescribed by the teaching team

Assist professional staff in supervising students across environments

Assist professional staff in the maintenance and operation of classrooms by prepping materials and classrooms for daily activities

Participate in scheduled paraeducator in-service and training

Assist professional staff with the collation, collating, and recording of data

Perform other tasks and duties as appropriate and/or assigned

Maintain Professionalism:

Accept constructive feedback and suggestions from the teaching team and use the information to enhance/improve one's work with children

Maintain a positive attitude and working relationship with both students and colleagues.

Effectively handle stress and stressful situations at work

Seek and ask for help if needed

Maintain a high level of confidentiality in accordance with Federal Law (FERPA)

Maintain a respectful demeanor with co-workers, parents, guardians, and students

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

Minimum Required: High school diploma.

At least two years of post-secondary education.

Preferred: Coursework in Early Childhood or related field (i.e. psychology, education, human development, etc.); Associate or Bachelor’s degree.

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities:

Working knowledge: Sufficient familiarity with the subject to know basic principles and terminology and to understand and solve simple problems.

General knowledge:

Sufficient knowledge of a field to perform most work in normal situations. The work calls for comprehension of standard situations and includes knowledge of most of the significant aspects of the subject.

Thorough knowledge: Advanced knowledge of the subject matter. The work calls for sufficient comprehension of the subject area to solve unusual as well as common work problems, to be able to advise on technical matters and to serve as a resource on the subject for others in the organization.

Comprehensive knowledge: Requires complete mastery and understanding of the subject. This term should be used sparingly and only for unusually exacting or responsible positions required to originate hypotheses, concepts, or approaches.

List Specific Skills And/Or Abilities Required:

Proficiency in English.

Ability to communicate effectively and respectfully with students, parents, guardians, and school staff.

Ability to consistently demonstrate enthusiasm in working with elementary-aged children.

Ability to tolerate stressful situations and maintain proper decorum.

Willingness to learn about children and their needs to better handle situations and problems.

SALARY:

As per the Master Agreement between the Burlington Board of School Commissioners and the Paraeducators of the Burlington School District.

Health and life insurance benefits are available for this position after a period of 45 working days. Dental benefits are available after 1 full working year.
