Qualifications:
Appropriate Department of Elementary and Secondary Education Educator's Licensure is required, (SPED, ESL or ELL Licensure Preferred).
Bachelors or higher level degree in Music Education
MA DESE Certification in Music Education K-12
Strong communication skills, both oral and written
Exemplary interpersonal communications skills that establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, parents and members of the community
Experience in teaching Elementary Music in a multi-cultural and multi-lingual environment
Proficiency in Kodaly/Conversational Solfege pedagogy
Proficiency in multi-cultural music genres and traditional genres
Commitment to changing lives through music education
Responsibilities / Terms of Employment:
As per the Somerville Educators Union, Unit A Collective Bargaining Agreement
Acquisition and distribution of string instruments throughout the school district
Instruct students on the proper maintenance of the instrument
Distribution of appropriate grade level string repertoire
Referral of string instruments for repair or replacement
Preparation of students for annual school performances (Winter & Spring Concerts)
Preparation of students for annual districtwide performances (Spring String Fling)
Recommend students for participation in Berklee City Music, private lessons, or similar programs
Acquisition, return and storage of district instruments
Sets up and maintains a professional website
Communication with families about student behaviors and upcoming performances
Reports to:
The School Principal and the K- 12 Supervisor of Music
