Job Goal:
The Full-time Teacher is an engaged and dynamic professional staff member at SCALE, an adult
basic
education learning center
near Davis Square in Somerville. SCALE, a division of Somerville Public Schools (SPS), serves adult multilingual learners and follows the SPS vacation/holiday calendar. SCALE classes are offered between 9am
2:30 PM,
minimum of 24 hours,
within a 35-hour weekly schedule
Qualifications:
Bachelor's Degree; Masters in
ESL,
Curriculum and
Instruction
L
iteracy,
SPED or related field
preferred
Three years successful and relevant teaching experience in adult education – at least one complete year teaching adult immigrants who have limited literacy
Experience with and interest in working with
SLIFE students
Demonstrated experience in curriculum development
Demonstrated knowledge of a variety of learner-centered teaching approaches and effective integrated skills activities; familiarity with UDL principles and remediation strategies preferred
Expertise in beginning reading/writing techniques, phonemic awareness, and basic phonics; experience with project-based approaches
preferred
Experience in teaching MCAS studies preferred
Excellent organizational and time management skills
Excellent oral and written communication skills in English
Strong computer skills including MS WORD, EXCEL, Google Classroom/Suite
BEST Plus and/or TABE certification or interest/willingness to be trained
Bilingual English and
Portuguese, Haitian Creole or Spanish preferred
Massachusetts Teacher certification, SEI endorsement,
and SP
ED
preferred
Teaching Responsibilities:
Reading Writing Foundations (RWF), a literacy class designed for
beginner level to
low intermediate ESOL stu
dents; along with academic
skills for
students enrolled in SCALE’s GOAL program, a content-centered class for ELL youth (17-25 years old).
Prepare and support students to fulfill
portfolio requirements
for ADP credential.
Substitute assistance, assist with computer lab schedule; provide general support to teachers and counselors
Prepare lesson plans according to department/program curricular guidelines and in alignment with Massachusetts DESE MA ELPS and CCRSAE.
Set and document professional and student learning goals, complete attendance and other recordkeeping,
assist in secure
substitutes and substitute lesson plans (for own classes) per department policy
Evaluate student progress and make placement recommendations as required by department policy
Collaborate with instructional leaders to conduct student interviews and proficiency testing for students
Communicate effectively with other teachers, counselors, and Program Administrators on student, program, and curriculum/instructional issues
Under the guidance of the Director of Continuing Educ
ation and Program Administrator
, initiate and contribute to work on projects in curriculum development, and/or school community projects
Participate in department and all staff meetings, school-wide activities, and appropriate program and staff development activities
Assist in establishing and maintaining the goals, philosophy, and policies of SCALE
Perform other miscellaneous department and/or SCALE duties as deemed appropriate by the Program Administrator or the Supervisor

Reports to:
Program Administrator and is also responsible to the Director of Continuing Education.
