Job Goal:
The job of Assistant Superintendent of Operations is done for the purpose/s of managing the planning, implementation, development, direction, assessment and evaluation of the district’s operations and related activities; managing and monitoring assigned district components; providing support to the Superintendent, School Committee and district administration as needed and/or assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
Master’s degree in education; management, or a related field
Minimum of five (5) years leadership experience in upper management, experience working directly with elected officials, superintendents, senior cabinet leaders, school board members and municipal management
Superintendent/ Assistant Superintendent License required
Responsibilities:
Advances and leads District-level strategic planning activities; builds and implements systems and structures for monitoring progress toward District goals
Oversees the following departments (Facilities, Food and Nutrition Services, Athletics, SFLC, Continuing Education, Information Technology, Enrollment, Data , Out of School Time and Health Services) for the purpose of ensuring effective delivery of services to schools and departments
Advises and supports the Superintendent of Schools in creating and facilitating management structures for the purpose of supporting effective and efficient decision-making
Provides direct support to Principals
Serves as the “point person” for operations inquiries and concerns
Advises and supports the Superintendent for the purpose of organizing a timely response to emerging issues and strategic priorities;
Serves as a key member of the Superintendent’s executive cabinet; coordinates agendas, facilitates meetings, and ensures follow-up as needed
Serves on critical response teams, including, but not limited to issues that relate to student safety, weather preparedness, etc.
Attends Regular School Committee meetings as well as special meetings for Executive Session
Directs the responses to all formal School Committee member operations requests
Supports the Subcommittees of the Somerville School Committee as needed
Acts as an advocate for the District and ensures that quality support and services are provided;
Assists the Superintendent, School Committee and district administration for the purpose of formalizing long-range facilities plans, evaluating available resources, funding mechanisms and projecting enrollment trends.
Assists the Assistant Superintendent of Academics with educational related.tasks.
Prepares financial projections for the purpose of determining the budgets necessary to carry out the facility and operations master plans.
Coordinates the analysis of sites, and the development of designs and plans for the purpose of carrying out the District’s facilities master plan.
Works with the Assistant Superintendent of Academics in the absence of the Superintendent for the purpose of reacting to issues, assessing needs and solving problems in ways that meet district goals while maintaining a safe, healthy and legally compliant educational environment.
Performs a variety of personnel functions (e.g. interviewing, hiring, evaluating, training, staffing, scheduling, supervising, etc.) for the purpose of providing efficient departmental operations throughout the District.
Coordinates information sharing and decision-making processes with various internal and external parties(especially Cabinet and Principals) for the purpose of ensuring a smooth and transparent system of operations.
Presents information on a wide variety of assigned issues for the purpose of conveying information and moving district goals forward in an effective, efficient and legally compliant manner.
Convenes cross-department working groups as needed to effectively support special projects.
Other appropriate duties as directed by the Superintendent of Schools and / or the Somerville School Committee.

Motivates, inspires, and moves other adults to action to achieve ambitious goals
Skilled at re-envisioning, building, and managing a team, especially in a time of growth and change; excellent at identifying talent and taking advantage of each person’s skills and contribution to team effort
