Project overview
Smart appliances do not always maximise the customer value across the lifecycle. This research aims to develop a self-engineering capability using AR/VR technologies that will support smart appliances to increase its availability and robustness. An AR-based intelligent chatbot could guide users on self-engineering of the appliances. Smart appliances with self-engineering capability are defined as an ability designed and built into a system to independently identify any loss or potential loss of function, and then automatically restore the functionality fully or partially to maintain its availability and improve system resilience. The self-engineering could be supported by changing the use scenarios of the smart appliances.
The research will build on condition monitoring capability of smart appliances, predict any failure, identify actions necessary from the users to self-adapt the appliances to avoid the failure. The research will also develop an adaptive training methodology for the users using the AR/VR environment to support the self-engineering. Please also visit for further information on a new AR/VR facility at City: ****The key research objectives of the PhD are:
Identify challenges for smart appliances through-life availability
Develop a novel condition monitoring and use scenario-based health prediction system
: this will involve identifying the parameters that affect the health of an appliance and its relationship with the failure modes.
Develop a virtual world of a network of appliances within a smart home
: this research will involve creation of a virtual world using a cloud-based AR/VR technology.
Develop a user model based on a smart home context
Develop a framework to engage users in a self-engineering capability development for an appliance within the smart home
: this will involve development of an AR-based intelligent chatbot.
Validation of the AR-based self-engineering framework with case studies
Disseminate the knowledge created widely

What I liked about the service is that it had such a comprehensive collection of jobs! I was using a number of sites previously and this took up so much time, but in joining EmploymentCrossing, I was able to stop going from site to site and was able to find everything I needed on EmploymentCrossing.
