The Department of Biology at the University of Central Arkansas (UCA) invites applications for a tenure-track position in Terrestrial Ecology. Preference will be given to those candidates with expertise in non-vertebrate, plant-biotic interactions. Teaching responsibilities will include the lower-division biology core (Principles of Biology II) and upper-division/graduate courses that contribute to the Biology and Environmental Science programs.
The appointment will be at the Assistant Professor level and will begin on August 16, 2022. Applications are sought from outstanding individuals who value quality teaching and are dedicated to developing an active research program involving undergraduate and Master’s level students, and show a commitment to work collaboratively to support diversity and inclusion. The position offers a reduced teaching load initially, dedicated research space, start-up funding, and opportunities for internal and external grants.
The Department of Biology has 31 full-time faculty, approximately 700 undergraduate majors, an interdisciplinary Environmental Science program, and a growing Master’s program that currently enrolls 30 graduate students (16 institutionally supported TA positions). The department is research active with current and past funding from external, competitive sources (e.g., NSF, NIH, and other federal and state agencies). Examples of shared facilities and equipment include an on-campus nature reserve, field stations, greenhouses, plant growth chambers, SEM/confocal microscopy facilities, boats, and field vehicles. Arkansas has a large diversity of terrestrial ecosystems, spanning seven unique ecoregions and ranging from upland and bottomland hardwood forests to oak and pine savannas, prairies, and glades. Interest in the restoration or management of Arkansas ecosystems, particularly prairies, would be an asset but not a requirement.
