Essential Job Duties:
The new Carolinas Regional Integrated Sciences and Assessment NOAA (RISA) program, the Carolinas Collaborative on Climate, Health, and Equity
, is recruiting a postdoctoral fellow with expertise in environmental epidemiology or population-based health research. This work will advance research on climate, health, and equity in Carolina communities. Our integrated physical and social science research will be tailored to the needs and priorities of the participating communities, and the solutions we develop will be co-designed to tackle both the societal drivers of risk and the changing climate hazard landscape. This work will involve community-based research that supports local community action and advances policies that address climate injustice. The study team is composed of interdisciplinary experts working at the intersection of climate, health, and equity across the Carolinas.
The Postdoctoral Research Scholar will perform epidemiologic analyses of the many ways in which climate change and weather vulnerability impact population health, with a focus on the most at-risk subgroups. Climate stressors of interest include: extreme heat, flooding, and wildfires.
Duties and Responsibilities
This position is located in Asheville, NC.
The Postdoctoral Research Scholar will be responsible for the support of community engaged research and population-based studies focused on climate data record activities, including development of datasets describing essential climate variables as observed from a variety of observational platforms (in situ, satellite, radar, etc.).
Other Work/Responsibilities:
Fully participate in RISA team (RISA, NCICS, NCEI, project teams, etc.) activities and meetings.
Make timely presentations at appropriate scientific venues as required.
Prepare and publish peer-reviewed research on activity results.
Prepare and submit grant applications for extramural support.
Other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Experience/Education:
Ph.D. or equivalent doctorate (e.g., M.D., D.V.M., Sc.D.) in appropriate field awarded no more than five (5) years from initial date of postdoctoral appointment.
Required Qualifications:
Ph.D. in Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Environmental Sciences (geography, etc.), or related field.
Experience with SAS or R.
Completion of Ph.D. by start date of appointment.
Experience with analysis of large observational and/or model climate datasets.
Demonstrated strong oral and written communication skills.
Personal enthusiasm for the project goals.
Ability to multitask and meet deadlines.
Ability to work independently as well as make positive team contributions.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with data management (e.g., hospital administrative data).
Experience with human subjects research (e.g., CITI training).
Experience with complex statistical modeling (e.g., longitudinal or clustered data, latent class analysis, causal mediation).
Experience with environmental risk assessment / exposure assessment.
Experience with climate models / climate observational data.
Experience with community-based participatory research.
