Profile

The Area Coordinator is a live-in master's degree-level professional who is responsible for promoting student learning and success for the operation of three residence halls, each housing between 150 and 270 students, that all contain a single or similarly themed living learning programs. This position requires the Area Coordinator to reside in their assigned on-campus apartment throughout the term of their appointment. The Area Coordinator is charged with supervising undergraduate and two graduate staff in the area and collaborating with campus partners, to shape the environment and experiences of residential students in the Sorority “quad”.
Duties/Physical Demands:
Listed below are both specific job duties of the Area Coordinator position as well as minimum professional standards expected of all Residence Life employees. These responsibilities encompass student and community development initiatives, both proactive and reactive, that directly influence the success of our residential students. They also detail administrative responsibilities, foundational to this success. Finally, they delineate behaviors that connote professionalism and a commitment to the values of the Office of Residence Life.
Living Learning Community Coordination
Collaborate with faculty and programs to provide educational, intentional, programs for LLCs within the residential area
Serve as the primary liaison to program partners on behalf of the Office of Residence Life
Coordinate LLC Advisory Councils
Instruct first year experience seminar and/or section(s) of learning community courses, as needed
Community Development
Cultivate a positive and engaging living environment that foster a sense of belonging and enables students to build positive relationships with one another
Maintain high visibility and availability, including attending community events, regularly touring the community, and interacting with residents
Know the residents and provide personal, social, academic, and occupational support and referral
Utilize institutional data to assess and respond to student needs
Collaborate with faculty and staff stakeholders to implement programmatic opportunities, some of which may be connected with living learning community themes
Serve as the financial, programmatic, and leadership adviser to the Community Leadership Team
Supervision
Supervise and train 2-3 graduate assistants, 8-14 resident assistants (directly) and an additional 10-12 resident assistants indirectly
Host weekly staff meetings to communicate upcoming events, discuss community concerns, and facilitate professional development experiences; conduct monthly area wide meetings with staff
Conduct bi-weekly one-on-one meetings with staff members
Ensure staff members are appropriately confronting and documenting behavioral issues and concerns
Provide regular formal and information feedback regarding job performance
Ensure that Resident Assistant duty procedures are followed
Oversee implementation of programs and strategies
Student Conduct and Crisis Management
Review all incident reports and police reports (if available) for incidents that take place in the community and/or involve residents living in the community
Respond to residents in need, referring to other professionals, when appropriate
Provide leadership during times of crisis in and adjacent to the community
Assume shared responsibility for campus-wide on-call duty year round
Assist in emergency situations as needed

Provide programs and other proactive educational interventions to enhance good decision-making by residents
Professional Development & Administration
Perform administrative duties associated with summer projects and assignments
Report, track, and follow up on maintenance issues with appropriate building managers, housekeeping staff, and physical facilities employees
Serve as the primary contact for parents and family members of residents
Serve on a minimum of two department standing committees
Administer student check-in, check-out, and room changes; assist with room condition reports and damage billing processes
Participate in departmental and divisional professional development activities
Participate in the recruitment, selection, and training of staff members for the Office of Residence Life
Overarching Staff Expectations
Serve as a role model for all hall staff and residents in personal and professional behaviors
Practice ethical stewardship of university resources
Demonstrate a commitment to diversity by promoting and attending campus & community multicultural events, facilitating professional development with RA staff, presenting on diversity, or implementing strategies.

Create and maintain positive professional relationships within the department and across the university

Minimum Qualifications:
This position requires a master’s degree and 2 years post master’s work experience.
Desired Qualifications:
Preferred master’s degree in education, college student personnel, counseling or human development and at least 2 years full-time post master’s work experience in residence life with demonstrated experience in Living Learning Communities and campus partnerships.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
The Area Coordinator must be able to work independently, demonstrate initiative, display strong commitment to student learning, communicate effectively, and work collaboratively with stakeholders inside and outside of the University. Individuals in this position must have the ability and willingness to assume shared responsibility for campus-wide on-call duty and respond to crisis and emergency situations.
