Job context
A research technician position is available within the palaeobiology research group in the School of Geography, Earth, and Environmental Sciences. The technician will support projects relating to the evolution of ray-finned fishes during the Palaeozoic, specifically working with 3D data and occurrence databases.
Job summary
The successful applicant will acquire, process and curate 3D data from CT scanning and structured light scanning to investigate the anatomy of ray-finned fish fossils. They will also upload occurrence record to the Paleobiology Database. They will work closely with the PI (Sam Giles) and Research Fellow to deliver the project and will assist the broader research group. There will be opportunities to contribute to research projects and may also be opportunities to take part public engagement activities. Funding will be available for the researcher to attend conferences and take part in training courses. Relocation expenses are available.
The post is funded by the Royal Society and is available immediately for 12 months. As this vacancy has limited funding the maximum salary that can be offered is Band 500, salary £25,716.
Main duties
Acquire and segment CT scan data of fossil fishes
Acquire and process structured light scanner data of fossil fishes
Curate existing CT scan data
Enter data (already compiled) into the Paleobiology Database
Work closely with the PI and postdoctoral researcher working on the project, as well as with other group members
Contribute to research outputs, including publications
Attend conferences
Promote equality and values diversity acting as a role model and fostering an inclusive working culture
Be aware of geoethical issues relating to palaeontological research
Required Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications, Experience
Essential
Completed undergraduate degree in Earth Sciences, Palaeobiology or a related field
Experience of carrying out an independent research project in palaeoobiology or a related field
Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Desirable
Experience with segmenting CT scan data
Experience of using or uploading data to the Paleobiology Database
Experience of interpreting fossil anatomy
Experience of managing large quantities of data
