College of Life and Environmental Sciences
This full-time post is available from 1 September 2022 on a fixed term basis until 31 August 2025.
The post
The College wishes to recruit a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to participate in a new project that aims to quantify how different aspects of reef-derived coastal protection benefits vary across gradients of reef ecological degradation. This Leverhulme Trust funded post, involving collaborative work with UNAM (Mexico) and the USGS, is available from 1
st
September 2022 for 3 years. The successful applicant will take a leading role in coordinating and participating in both the overseas field-based and lab-based aspects of the proposed work, including working with the project partners on modelling changing coastal vulnerability under sea-level rise.
The postholder will be required to participate in several periods of overseas fieldwork to assess both physical and geo-ecological attributes of the reefs, as well as being responsible for undertaking relevant experiments to better constrain local reef carbonate production and erosion rates, and will assist with parameterising models to explore changing coastal exposure risk.
About you
Applicants will possess a relevant PhD or equivalent qualification/experience in a relevant field of study. The successful applicant will be a nationally recognised authority in the field of coral reef geomorphology or ecology and possess sufficient specialist knowledge in the discipline to develop research programmes and methodologies. The successful applicant will also be able to work collaboratively, supervise the work of others and act as team leader as required. Applicants will be able to demonstrate clear evidence of involvement in tropical marine (including SCUBA-based) fieldwork and experience of research focused on assessing ecological or geo-ecological functions on coral reefs. Experience with GIS or modelling software would be advantageous. The successful applicant will be able to develop research objectives, projects and proposals; identify sources of research funding and contribute to the process of securing funds and make presentations at conferences and other events.
