The School of Life Sciences are seeking to appoint an experienced post-doctoral molecular biologist, or soon-to-complete PhD student, to join our exciting new marine biotechnology program at the **MEMBERS ONLY**SIGN UP NOW***., led by Dr Nick Aldred and Dr Phil Reeves.
The combined expertise of the Aldred and Reeves laboratories in marine biotechnology and recombinant
protein production inspired this large, multidisciplinary, internationally-funded effort to develop synthetic barnacle adhesives for human surgery and other high-value material applications.
The research spans two of the School’s four research groups; 'Ecology and Environmental Microbiology’ as well as 'Protein Structure and Mechanisms of Disease'. As such, the successful candidate will access broad expertise and cutting edge skills, as well as opportunities to contribute across disciplines and visit collaborating laboratories in the USA and Italy.
The objective will be to produce three previously-identified barnacle cement proteins using a recombinant protein production system, and to characterise the properties of those proteins using a range of biochemical and spectroscopic methods. Applicants must have good competence in general molecular biology techniques, and willingness to learn a variety of new techniques that may be needed to characterise bioadhesive proteins. This initial opportunity is for a starting period of 12 months as part of a longer funded program.
Duties of the post
The researcher in this post will deliver the research objectives defined by the ONR grant and research project. You will develop an experimental pipeline to deliver recombinant barnacle cement proteins using a mammalian expression system, including gene design, bioinformatics, DNA cloning, stable cell line construction, large-scale growth of mammalian cells in a bioreactor and protein purification. You will use specified characterisation techniques, including fluorescence assays and immunohistochemistry, to demonstrate activity and purity of recombinantly-produced proteins.
You will undertake or manage practical elements of research such as setting up and conducting experiments, conducting fieldwork, analysing data and engaging in individual and/or collaborative research activities resulting in internationally excellent publications that is in keeping with Research Excellence Framework
(REF) criteria.

Skills and qualifications required
The successful candidate will hold a relevant doctoral level degree in biological sciences, or equivalent professional experience or practice.
