Our farms operate on 1,100 acres, housing beef and dairy cattle, poultry, sheep, swine, and horses, and turning grain and forage into feed and bedding for our animals. And our facilities don t stop at the boundary of our Urbana campus; we maintain and study herds at research and Extension centers throughout Illinois. \r\n\r\n\t \r\n\r\n\tThe Dixon Springs Agricultural Center (DSAC) is located in the southern part of Illinois near Simpson. The station operates on approximately 580 acres of university-owned property, and about 4,200 acres under special use permit with the U.S. Forest Service. The Department of Animal Sciences manages approximately 900 beef cows and their offspring that are involved in research in genetics associated with feed efficiency, reproduction, and nutrition. For more information, visit ****DESCRIPTION SUMMARIZING POSITION:\r\n\r\n\t\r\n\t\t\r\n\t\t\t\r\n\t\t\t\t\r\n\t\t\t\t\tFull time 100% position will work closely with faculty conducting hands-on research, coordinating animal teaching, and facilitating extension activities at the Dixon Springs Agricultural Center in Simpson, IL.\r\n\t\t\t\r\n\t\t\r\n\t\r\n\r\n\r\n\t \r\n\r\n\tSPECIFIC DUTIES & RESPONSIBILIIES \r\n\r\n\t \r\n\r\n\t\r\n\t\tFacilitate research, educational, and extension activities and needs of faculty, graduate students, and others at the Dixon Springs Agricultural Center.\r\n\r\n\r\n\t \r\n\r\n\t\r\n\t\tMaintain and support research protocol standards to assure quality animal care compliance procedures.\r\n\r\n\r\n\t \r\n\r\n\t\r\n\t\tCollect, analyze, evaluate, and summarize empirical data including formulation of recommendations and implementation of improvements and planning to facilitate programmatic goals.\r\n\r\n\r\n\t \r\n\r\n\t\r\n\t\tDesign, develop, implement, integrate, and maintain research data collection systems for the unit.\r\n\r\n\r\n\t \r\n\r\n\t\r\n\t\tProvide on-site management and supervision of the Dixon Springs Agricultural Center in Simpson, IL.\r\n\r\n\r\n\t \r\n\r\n\t\r\n\t\tEstablish written research targets, develop Standard Operating Procedures, and to enforce consistent research methodology associated with the unit.\r\n\r\n\r\n\t \r\n\r\n\t\r\n\t\tAid with on-going teaching and/or training in any areas of human resources, environmental management, animal-care, safety, etc. which effect the on-going regulatory requirements of the unit.\r\n\r\n\r\n\t \r\n\r\n\t\r\n\t\tProvide day to day supervision of animal care personnel including non-academic staff\r\n\r\n\r\n\t \r\n\r\n\t\r\n\t\tEstablish and maintain professional standards for facility appearance. Assist with supervision of maintenance of facilities to ensure competence and integrity of research efforts.\r\n\r\n\r\n\t \r\n\r\n\t\r\n\t\tCoordinate and facilitate procurement of commodities and resources necessary for optimal operations and maintenance of Dixon Springs Agricultural Center facilities.\r\n\r\n\r\n\t \r\n\r\n\t\r\n\t\tMaintain fiscal responsibility at the facility including management of facility expenses, development of budgets and reports, recovery of teaching and research costs, and maintenance of accounting records for budgetary and compliance purposes.\r\n\r\n\r\n\t \r\n\r\n\t\r\n\t\tOther duties as assigned to enhance the mission of the department.\r\n\r\n\r\n\t \r\n\r\n\tSome work will be required during evenings and/or weekends. In performing the functions of this position, the employee may be subjected to various mental and physical demands as well to include, but not limited to, independently traveling to and performing work at different locations, lifting and moving items that may frequently weigh up to fifty (50) pounds and occasionally weigh up to seventy-five (75) pounds, and twisting, pushing and pulling movements. The successful candidate must have computer experience in record keeping and the ability to interpret research protocols and make modifications, with input from the faculty coordinator.\r\n\r\n\t \r\n\r\n\tPreferred: Previous experience in managing a beef cattle operation and operation of farm machinery and equipment. Knowledge of and experience working with specific beef herd management computerized tools. Ability and proficiency in artificial insemination techniques to breed cows and heifers.
