Job purpose and duties:
The **MEMBERS ONLY**SIGN UP NOW***. invites applications for the position of Technical Research Officer in Industrial Automation within Smart Factory Hub (SmartFub) project, through a European Structural Investment Fund (ESIF). Post-holder will support the establishment of industrially relevant technology demonstrators, drive commercial adoption of digital technologies to enable high-value sustainable manufacturing, new product development via a range of technology transfer channels and collaborations (e.g. feasibility studies and industry-focused R&D projects) within SmartFub.
Primarily based in the School of Engineering, post-holder is expected to work in other locations periodically. The role will involve collaboration with SMEs in Greater Birmingham and Solihull (GBS), Black Country (BC), Coventry & Warwickshire (C&W) and Stoke & Staffordshire (S&S) Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) areas. Hence, ability to interact with external commercial organisations is a prerequisite for this position. The main duties are:
Conduct technology audits, scoping studies, demonstration projects on development of industrial automation solutions to address specific industry requirements.
Apply these solutions to manufacturing issues/ challenges relevant to the SmartFub stakeholders, notably partner companies and SMEs in above LEP areas.
Develop new applications of industrial automation technology, working closely with colleagues within the SmatFub partnership.
Work with wider Project Team in delivery of business assists/ knowledge transfer activities. Identifying new manufacturing/ automation methods and techniques arising from their work or that of co-workers which may provide sources of new intellectual property.
Contributing to writing of bids for future work in the SmartFub themes and delivery of resulting collaborative projects.
Providing appropriate training to beneficiaries of SmartFub to enable them to implement and apply the digital manufacturing technologies, techniques and methodologies developed and demonstrated by the project.
Preparation of reports, publications, training material, presentations and web content suitable for both academic and end user SME users.
Skills/Experience:
The successful candidate should have a relevant first degree or Master in Mechanical, Materials or Manufacturing Engineering (or related discipline / equivalent experience) and hold a PhD or EngD in a similar area. The required knowledge and skillsets for the position include:
High level competence/ experience in advanced industrial automation, e.g. collaborative robotics and sensor technology
High level competence in planning, conducting complex analytical and empirical studies
Fluency in relevant models, techniques or methods and ability to contribute to developing new ones
Ability to assess resource requirements/ utilise resources effectively
Understanding of and ability to contribute to broader management/administration processes
Ability to summarise and communicate complex issues/concepts and present them appropriately for a range of audiences.
Ability to plan, manage, prioritise own workload, respond to changing priorities, deliver innovative solutions to deadlines maintaining consistently high standard of service/ meeting client needs.
Ability to work effectively, part of multi-functional team across partner organisations.
