About the role
The oral mucosa is one of the most rapidly dividing tissues in the body and serves as a barrier to constant physical and chemical insults. Despite key barrier functions and susceptibility to highly prevalent oral squamous cell cancer, it remains a largely understudied tissue. You will join the research group of Dr Ana Caetano at the Barts and the London School of Medicine and Dentistry, **MEMBERS ONLY**SIGN UP NOW***. to explore the molecular mechanisms that regulate oral mucosa development and tumorigenesis using various techniques including high-throughput next-generation sequencing technologies, mouse genetics and computational modelling.
Our lab is interested in identifying the molecular mechanisms by which multiple inter-related cell types develop, specifically how neuroimmune interactions are established and how these contribute to oral epithelia barrier integrity. We have previously shown that human adult oral mucosa homeostasis is dependent on complex multicellular networks (Caetano et al., eLife, 2021; Caetano et al., eLife, 2023); however, the molecular and cellular mechanisms that regulate oral mucosa development and disease response remain to be studied. This project will involve in vivo and in vitro approaches to identify mechanisms that control developmental and disease responses of oral mucosa neuronal and non-neuronal cells and determine how these contribute to tissue function. A variety of other projects on oral epithelia barrier homeostasis are possible, depending on the candidate’s interest and background.
The post will be associated with the Centre for Oral Immunobiology and Regenerative Medicine and the Barts Centre for Squamous Cancer located within the Blizard Institute at QMUL’s Whitechapel Campus in East London. The work will involve hands-on laboratory work as well as computer-based work. Training opportunities and significant growth in expertise will be available (e.g. bioinformatics).
The post is a full time, fixed term appointment for 12 months, with an expected start date in September 2023.
About You
We are looking for a highly motivated research assistant with experience and knowledge in developmental and stem cell biology and conditional transgenics models; however, the position enables significant growth in expertise. The successful applicant will be a motivated team member who is a critical thinker and can work independently, have excellent communication skills with the ability to work collaboratively and promote positive research culture within the laboratory. Previous work experience as a research support technician is highly desirable.
About the Institute
The post will be associated with the Institute of Dentistry’s Centre for Oral Immunobiology and Regenerative Medicine and will be located within the Blizard Institute at QMUL’s Whitechapel Campus in East London. The Blizard Institute, established in 2003, is a world-class research institute. It is organised into 5 separate Centres, which though complementary and following the Institute strategic plan, also have Centre-specific objectives and requirements. The Blizard Institute aims to deliver excellence in all aspects of research, teaching and clinical service.
Queen Mary’s commitment to our diverse and inclusive community is embedded in our appointments processes. Reasonable adjustments will be made at each stage of the recruitment process for any candidate with a disability. We are open to considering applications from candidates wishing to work flexibly.
