Project overview
Industrial Metaverse has the potential to support new product development, production decisions and through-life engineering within a manufacturing context. The metaverse aims to provide a realistic virtual environment where engineers can interact with different stakeholders and assess technical performance of a product using digital twins of their physical systems, including computationally expensive FEA, CFD and other simulation models. The architecture of the metaverse builds on through-life knowledge graphs and can support ethical design review, production trade offs and through-life considerations. AR/VR technologies within a cloud-based environment, digital twins and blockchain based identity management could support development of such a metaverse and visualise it through-life and with the partners and the supply chain. Design and more use of the industrial metaverse is a major challenge as it is very resource and knowledge intensive process, and that is slowing down the adoption of the technology in industry. This research will develop metaverse design methodologies that will significantly reduce the new metaverse development time. Please also visit for further information on a new AR/VR facility at City: ****The key research objectives of the PhD are:
Identify the barriers to adoption of the Metaverse
Develop a platform based industrial metaverse design methodology
: this will bring more interoperability between metaverses and allow rapid metaverse development.
Develop a knowledge based scalable metaverse architecture
: this will innovate a novel architecture for the metaverse that is scalable and flexible to incorporate variety of product configurations.
Develop a library of through-life concepts using the AR/VR technology that could be reused across the lifecycle of a product family
: the research will identify the key through-life concepts by studying popular product lifecycles and specify the concepts.
Validation of the industrial metaverse
using case studies.
Disseminate the knowledge created widely
