Position Summary:
The part-time, Assistant Academic Advisor will report to the Associate Director, University Advising Services. The part-time, Assistant Academic Advisor will assist students in all aspects of the advising process, which includes the development and implementation of meaningful educational goals, informed academic planning, and major selection consistent with their personal values, interests, and abilities. The part-time, Assistant Academic Advisor may work from an office within the University Advising Center, or from other locations across campus.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Advise students about academic requirements and selection of courses, in the form of both individual and group sessions (including advising hours at the Camden campus as needed)
Provide career advising as it relates to major selection
Review and interpret placement and other standardized test scores, unofficial transcripts, and course prerequisites
Develop advising materials and presentations to support individual and group advising sessions
Stay abreast of institutional information including admissions requirements, academic programs, course changes, deadlines, important dates, costs, expanding facilities, updates in college-wide initiatives, transfer requirements, and state and federal mandates Maintain up-to-date knowledge of degree program requirements
Understand and interpret for students the University's academic standing policy
Provide guidance on relevant institutional policies and procedures
Understand the institution's interpretation of FERPA rules for the release of student information
Maintain accurate records (including electronic notes) of interactions with students
Serve as a liaison and foster intentional relationships with other advisors, offices, colleges, and departments
Refer students to appropriate specialized staff for services such as tutoring, testing, counseling, financial assistance, study abroad, etc.
Assist with new student orientations for first-time college students and transfer students
Participate in Admissions activities (e.g., Open House)
Participate in planning, implementation, and evaluation of the academic advisement program's goals and objectives
Engage in professional development activities, including but not limited to, memberships in professional organizations; attendance at conferences, workshops, and training sessions; stay current with information technology skills (e.g., Banner)
Participate in institutional student development and retention programs
Perform other related duties as assigned by the Associate Director, UAS
Required Qualifications:
One year of experience providing academic advising services to undergraduate students in a post-secondary educational institution is preferred. Experience advising across a range of curricula preferred, including working with the undeclared student population. A Master's in Higher Education, Counseling in Educational Settings, Student Personnel Services, or another field relevant to the position may be substituted for one year of experience.
Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution of higher education
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience working with students with a variety of academic interests and abilities
Experience working with students across a range of disciplines
Experience in a relevant academic discipline
Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, e-mail, student information systems (Banner), and internet
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and analytical skills
High level customer service attitude
Ability to learn new technologies quickly
