Project title:
Nanostructured Self-Assembly of Bio-Derived and Bio-Inspired Lipid-Based Amphiphiles: Synthesis
Department/School: Chemistry/SCFP
Supervisors: Prof Ian Hamley
Project Overview:
This exciting research project is associated with an EPSRC Fellowship award to Prof Hamley. This is a 4-year project which also involves two postdoctoral researchers and another PhD studentship. This studentship is focused on the synthesis of innovative classes of nanostructured lipid conjugates (NLCs) containing bio-derived and biocompatible lipids, peptides and sugars linked together into multi-functional molecules. Combining these natural molecules by linking different components will lead to a diversity of functional biomaterials such as biocompatible surfactants, drug delivery systems, nanostructured membranes and others. This is a cutting edge project that will deliver transformative discoveries using materials that will be designed taking inspiration from nature and using nature's palette of biomolecular functions, which have been evolved for optimal performance under specific conditions. This PhD project will be focused on the synthesis of NLCs using novel lipids, peptides and/or glycopolymers and an interest in and/or experience with chemical synthetic methods and analytical procedures is needed. The materials synthesized will mainly be characterised by other postdoctoral and postgraduate researchers within the team, although there is scope to be involved with this also.
Eligibility:
Applicants should hold or expect to gain a minimum of a 2:1 Bachelor Degree or equivalent in Chemistry or a related subject
