The Paraeducator for the Alternative Education Program is a unionized, non-exempt/hourly position with the BEA Paraeducators. They will report to the Principal of the Alternative Program. Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, the Paraeducator will assist professionals in supplying individualized instruction to students in our high school alternative programs. They will assist students with meeting the goals and objectives of their Individualized Education Plan (IEP), behavioral plan, social emotions goals, independent living skills, and/or employability needs; attend to the physical and health needs of students; monitor and report student progress regarding educational performance or behavior; support in student classroom management, and perform a variety of clerical and supportive duties related to classroom activities and academics. Responsibilities include communication facilitation, carrying out programs designed by the teaching staff, managing behavior, teaching self-regulation skills, supporting & facilitating social engagement with peers, data collection, and team meetings. Physical responsibilities include lifting, carrying, personal care, and the ability to assess a situation and respond quickly.
The Essential Functions of this position include
Support the developmental growth of each child:
Facilitate student’s engagement in academic, behavioral, and social-emotional activities by providing guided access to school-related activities, behavioral cues, and academic tasks.
Use motivation/positive behavior management technique
Understand adolescents, their behaviors, and motivation: primarily related to mental health needs, social-emotional learning, and trauma-informed interventions and practices.
Work Collaboratively with Teaching Team by
Designing, implementing, and Following, IEP Objectives, and Behavior Plans
Using methods, materials, and supporters as prescribed by the teaching team
Assist professional staff in supervising students across environments
Assist professional staff in the maintenance and operation of classrooms by prepping materials and classrooms for daily activities
Participate in scheduled paraeducator in-service and trainings
Assist professional staff with the collation, collating, and recording of data
Perform other tasks and duties as appropriate and/or assigned
Maintain Professionalism:
Accept constructive feedback and suggestions from the teaching team and use the information to enhance/improve one's work with the students.
Maintain a positive attitude and working relationship with both students and colleagues.
Effectively handle stress and stressful situations at work
Seek and ask for help if needed
Maintain a high level of confidentiality in accordance with Federal Law (FERPA)
Maintain a respectful demeanor with co-workers, parents, guardians, and students
The required education and experience for this position include
Education
Minimum Required; High school diploma.
At least two years of post-secondary education.
Experience:
Minimum Required: Two years experience in education or related field: the ability to communicate effectively and respectfully with students, parents, and school staff.
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities:
Working knowledge: Sufficient familiarity with the subject to know basic principles and terminology and to understand and solve simple problems.
General knowledge:
Sufficient knowledge of a field to perform most work in normal situations. The work calls for comprehension of standard situations and includes knowledge of most of the significant aspects of the subject.
Thorough knowledge: Advanced knowledge of the subject matter. The work calls for sufficient comprehension of the subject area to solve unusual as well as common work problems, to be able to advise on technical matters and to serve as a resource on the subject for others in the organization.
Comprehensive knowledge: Requires complete mastery and understanding of the subject. This term should be used sparingly and only for unusually exacting or responsible positions required to originate hypotheses, concepts, or approaches.
List Specific Skills And/Or Abilities Required:
Proficiency in English.
Ability to communicate effectively and respectfully with students, parents, guardians, and school staff.
Ability to consistently demonstrate enthusiasm in working with high school-age students.
Ability to tolerate stressful situations and maintain proper decorum.
Willingness to learn about the students and their needs to better handle situations and problems
