Postdoctoral Researcher in Targeting Cancers Dependent on the Alternative Lengthening of Telomeres Pathway
Department of Oncology, MRC Weatherall Institute of Molecular Medicine (WIMM), John Radcliffe Hospital, Headington, Oxford, OX3 9DS
This is a re advertisement. Previous applicants need not apply
About the role
We have an exciting new opportunity for a Postdoctoral Researcher to join a research group on a collaborative project between the **MEMBERS ONLY**SIGN UP NOW***. and Merck Healthcare, reporting to Prof Peter McHugh in the DNA Damage and Repair laboratory. The aim of this project is to explore the mechanism by which a subset of cancers achieve immortality through the aberrant lengthening of their chromosome ends (telomeres)
via
a pathway known as the Alternative Lengthening of Telomeres (ALT), aiming to exploit this knowledge for therapeutic benefit.
You will lead a project aimed of identifying novel targets and small molecules for the selective targeting of cancer cells dependent on the ALT pathway. You will be required to develop novel screening platforms using CRISPR-Cas9 genome engineering technologies and optimise a variety of markers to gauge the ability of a given small molecule to confer synthetic lethality in the context of a positive ALT pathway.
Collaborating with researchers from across the **MEMBERS ONLY**SIGN UP NOW***.’s various technology platforms, you will review and test hypotheses, generating high-quality, reproducible data in a format suitable for publication, presentation and submission for grant applications to generate research income. You will maintain accurate recording of samples, reagents and all experiments undertaken in a designated electronic lab notebook. You will be expected to collaborate in the preparation of scientific reports and journal articles and occasionally present papers and posters, representing the research group at national/international meetings as required.
In addition to managing your own research and administrative activities, you will be expected to provide guidance to less experienced members of the research group, and assist with the peer review of manuscripts and grant applications.
The post will be based in the MRC Weatherall Institute of Molecular Medicine (WIMM), John Radcliffe Hospital, Headington, Oxford, OX3 9DS and is offered on a full-time, fixed-term basis until 31 January 2023.
Please note: An early start date is essential for this post.
About you
You will hold, or be close to completing, a PhD/DPhil in cell biology, molecular biology or other relevant field, and have previous experience in basic molecular biology techniques, including mammalian tissue culture. A background in telomere biology (in particular the ALT pathway), genome stability, or related areas of chromosome biology is essential, together with demonstrable experience of contributing to publications/presentations.
Excellent communication skills, including the ability to write for publication, present research proposals and results, and willingness to represent the research group at meetings, are required for this role.
Application Process
You will be required to upload a supporting statement (setting out how you meet the selection criteria), a curriculum vitae and the names and contact details of two referees as part of your online application.
Prospective candidates are encouraged to send informal enquiries to Professor Peter McHugh ( ****
) before applying.
Only applications received by 12pm GMT on Friday 25th March 2022 will be considered.

What I liked about the service is that it had such a comprehensive collection of jobs! I was using a number of sites previously and this took up so much time, but in joining EmploymentCrossing, I was able to stop going from site to site and was able to find everything I needed on EmploymentCrossing.
