York St John is an ambitious, modern university at the heart of historic York and there has never been a more exciting time to join us.
As one of the fastest-growing universities in the U.K over recent years, we have a new strategy for the next decade, emphasising our commitment to widening opportunity through the power of education and contributing our talents to creating a fairer world, and a more prosperous region. We are putting inspirational learning and impactful research at the heart of this strategy, recognising our academic expertise as our greatest asset.
Law is part of York Business School. Our LLB programme started in 2018 and has developed rapidly; in 2020 we opened York St John Law Clinic, in which students give legal advice and assistance under the supervision of experienced staff, and in 2021 our innovative LLM Legal Practice (LPC) welcomed its first students. You will join us as we prepare to redesign and revalidate our LLB, to reflect the changes in the legal education and graduate employment landscape and our own developing identity. Our teaching will emphasise personal and skills development, with a focus on employability. We aim to place law in context to further understanding and develop analytical, critical thinking and problem-solving skills. We have high expectations of, and aspirations for, our students and we aim to create engaging teaching and assessment which fosters understanding and develops valuable transferable skills. We pride ourselves in knowing our students as individuals and in offering high levels of personal support.
We are seeking an enthusiastic new colleague to join us on this journey. The ideal candidate will have to teach most of the core subjects with particular ability to teach family law on the LLB and LLM Legal Practice (LPC) and supervise students advising on divorce and child arrangement matters in York St John Law Clinic. They may be a current or former legal practitioner in this area. An understanding of immigration law and/or mental health law would also be desirable.
The ideal candidate would demonstrate successful teaching experience in Higher Education or at equivalent levels of professional practice, be willing to work towards achieving Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy and to contribute towards Law’s developing research agenda.
