The role
EPICut project: A postdoc position is available with Prof. Mark Szczelkun in the School of Biochemistry as part of a prestigious ERC advanced grant. The ambition of the EPICut project is to understand the mechanistic basis for how a diverse set of prokaryotic Type IV restriction systems target epigenetic modifications to cleave mobile genetic elements such as phage.
What will you be doing?
We are looking for a talented and enthusiastic individual who can use protein biochemistry, biophysical assays, nanopore sequencing and/or single molecule techniques to investigate the mechanisms of modified DNA recognition and cleavage. You will join an established and well-funded research lab in the DNA-Protein Interactions Unit, with access to biophysical equipment including stopped flow, ITC, etc, as well as TIRF and magnetic tweezers microscopes. The role will involve the day-to-day project management, collaborations with other members of the EPICut project (a PDRA and technician in Bristol, and a PDRA in Exeter), and assisting with training and supervision of postgraduate/undergraduate students.

A PhD in protein biochemistry, biophysics, or a related subject is essential (awarded or imminent). Previous experience of the following is desirable, but training can be provided: analysis of protein-DNA interactions; enzymology; single-molecule microscopy; nanopore sequencing. You will be highly organised, and eager to learn new skills and to interact with a broad range of colleagues.
