Essential Job Duties:
The agent in this position will have educational responsibilities in all phases of field crop production. The successful candidate must be able to conduct educational programs that focus on the profitability and sustainability of North Carolina field crops, utilizing best practices based on research to include the adoption of proven technology, business, and financial practices. The successful candidate will be responsible for applied research development in the program area.
Primary Function of Organizational Unit
North Carolina Cooperative Extension gives our residents easy access to the resources and expertise of NC State University and NC A&T State University. Through educational programs, publications, and events, Cooperative Extension field faculty deliver unbiased, research-based information to North Carolina citizens.
Both Surry and Yadkin County are in the northwestern foothills of North Carolina. This position will be housed in Surry County. This region of North Carolina is loaded with unrivaled natural resources, beautiful topography, and charming small towns and communities. The area is within easy driving distance of urban areas such as Winston-Salem, Greensboro, and Charlotte, as well as the beautiful Blue Ridge mountains.
Agriculture in the two counties is a strong fiber in the economic fabric of the region. This position will cover approximately 65,000 acres of field crops including corn, soybeans, tobacco, and small grains. Together, these crops have an annual farm income of over $50,000,000. Farmers in the two counties are regularly recognized as being on the cutting edge of production and are yield winners in state and national circles. Extension enjoys a supportive relationship with both counties.
Other Work/Responsibilities:
This position provides leadership for the development, implementation, and evaluation of an effective educational program to meet the needs of both counties in the area of field crops. This position will function as county pesticide coordinator and be responsible for providing educational training opportunities for private, public, and commercial operators to obtain and maintain their licenses. The agent will be expected to develop and market educational programs with measurable impacts and to collaborate with other agencies, groups, and organizations in order to more effectively reach intended audiences throughout the county.
Minimum Experience/Education:
One of the following educational requirements: - A Bachelor's degree with a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 overall or a 3.0 (based on a 4.0 scale) in the job related field. The minimum GPA requirement will be waived for NCCE Program Associates with a Bachelor's degree. - A Bachelor's degree and the completion of at least one-half of coursework in a Master's degree curriculum with a cumulative grade point average 3.0 or higher with at least one of the degrees in the job related field, or - Completion of a Master's degree with at least one of the degrees in the job related field. Also required: a personal automobile; computer literacy; strong oral and written communication skills; the ability to plan, implement, market, and evaluate educational programs; willingness to work as a team member and support a total Extension program; and the ability to handle multiple demands and set priorities. Personal Attributes: Successful performance of the duties encompassed in the County Extension Area Agent's job requires that the individual possess habits of industry, a sense of responsibility, and a genuine appreciation for the worth of the individual. The employee must be adept in both oral and written communication. The County Extension Area Agent has primary responsibility for planning, executing, and evaluating that phase of county Extension programs within assigned areas of program responsibility. The County Extension Area Agent cooperates with colleagues in the North Carolina Cooperative Extension and county leaders in performing assigned responsibilities. The performance of assigned responsibilities is governed by the philosophy, objectives, policies, and procedures of the North Carolina Cooperative Extension.
Required Qualifications:
A bachelor's degree in crop science, agronomy, or a related agricultural field is required.
Travel within the district and assigned counties is required. Occasional travel outside the district is also required.
Preferred Qualifications:
A Master's degree is preferred.
Extension or other professional experience, including a high level of computer competency, is desired.
