Job Description:
General Summary:
The Assistant Director for Learning Services coordinates and implements learning support services for undergraduate students and has responsibility for oversight and management of overall campus tutoring efforts, the Peer Academic Coach program, individual academic coaching, learning support resources, and disability support services, including supervision of the Disability Support Services Manager. The Assistant Director collaborates with Academic Support Center, the Experiential Learning and Student Success Workgroup and other departments within the division of Student Formation and Community Engagement to support wider University initiatives as well as enrollment, retention, advising, and degree completion goals. As both a resource to and advocate for students, the Assistant Director understands the structural barriers which have historically disadvantaged first-generation students, LGBTQIA students, non-traditionally aged students, students with disabilities, and students of color.
Job Duties Include:
Learning Support Resources:
Utilizes the most efficient, effective, and creative methods to provide learning support that encourages overall student success in the areas of: study strategies, time management, note taking, reading, test taking, test anxiety, participation in class discussions, completion of class projects, and general academic success. Identifies scalable options (e.g. web resources, video, Canvas modules, in-person training, etc.) to deliver this support. These resources will help support Academic Support Center programing, in particular the Tutoring Program, Peer Academic Coach Program, and Academic Coaching. These resources may also provide direct or indirect support of existing peer programs (e.g. mentors in UCOL, BioCORE, BIO 1859, etc.).
Tutoring Program:
Responsibility for oversight and management of overall campus tutoring efforts including study tables and private tutoring. Includes but is not limited to: hiring, training, evaluation, scheduling, resourcing, budgeting, all logistics, and empowering tutors to help manage as many of these items as practicable. Works with academic departments and other campus partners to determine and adjust tutoring offerings, prioritizing based on available resources and maximum impact on student success. Coordinates all marketing, calendaring, and advertising processes with support from the tutors themselves and other student workers within the Academic Support Center.
Peer Academic Coach Program:
Responsibility for oversight and management of the Peer Academic Coach program. Includes but is not limited to: hiring, training, evaluation, scheduling, resourcing, budgeting, all logistics, and empowering Peer Academic Coaches to help manage as many of these items as practicable. Works to align the objectives and outcomes of the Peer Academic Coach program with the overall mission of the Academic Support Center, with particular focus on support for larger academic coaching efforts.
Supervision of the Disability Support Services Manager:
As part of broader learning support services for the department, the Assistant Director is responsible for supervision of the Disability Support Services Manager. Includes but is not limited to hiring, development, training, evaluation, and scheduling priorities. The Assistant Director has responsibility for coverage, management, coordination, and oversight all critical disability support services in the absence of the Disability Support Services Manager. The Assistant Director will work with the Disability Support Services Manager, Academic Support Center Director, and other campus partners towards continual improvement of programs and process as well as advocacy for students with disabilities. Assistant Director meets regularly with the 504 Coordinator to ensure good collaboration and continual clarity of roles and responsibilities.
Academic Coaching:
Provides one-on-one academic coaching for students in the areas of: study strategies, time management, note taking, reading, test taking, test anxiety, participation in class discussions, completion of class projects, and general academic success. Students typically referred by faculty or academic counselors as part of the Academic Probation or Early Alert processes.
Support for Underrepresented Students:
Understands and remains current on the unique needs of first-generation students, LGBTQIA students, non-traditionally aged students, students with disabilities, students of color, and other underrepresented student groups. Contributes to a culture of continuous learning and development. Identifies and advocates for changes in process, requirements, and policy which inequitably create barriers to student success.
Projects/Other Duties:
Additional projects and other duties as assigned by the Director in support of the objectives and mission of the Academic Support Center. Provides leadership for Academic Support Center in the Director's absence.
Requirements:
Bachelor's Degree
At least three years of demonstrated experience with learning support in higher education, including experience with student programming, student supervision, and supporting individual student learning needs.
Strong ability to work with multiple professional perspectives. Must enjoy working with students. Must be able to develop trusting work relationships with students in order to understand needs and help develop action plans to meet personal learning goals and increase their success at the University.
Proficient with Microsoft Office suite, including Word, Outlook and Excel.
Preferred qualifications:
Master's degree in Education or related field
Knowledge of the needs of students with learning disabilities or experience working with learning disabilities.
Experience or knowledge of ESL issues at the post-secondary level helpful.
Background in an integrated administrative computer environment; Student Information System database; Microsoft Office Suite.

Hourly rate: $26.92 - $29.81 per hour
