Project Summary
This fully-funded 3.5 year Leverhulme-funded
transdisciplinary PhD opportunity combines developing immersive experiences with urban studies, history and environmental sustainability. Game engines and headsets provide new opportunities to step back into time and explore recreated landscapes and learn about the past. Anyone with an Oculus headset can now visit Anne Frank’s home and see the world she inhabited during her time in hiding.
In this project, you will work with historians and immersive producers to create new experiences with this transformative technology and test the extent to which augmented reality can challenge and enhance the ways people relate to history.
A key goal is to encourage users to think about the limits of the biosphere in the present and the future by exploring the global supply chains that allowed nineteenth century Manchester to grow beyond regional ecological limits.
The project will aspire to making the invisible connections of nineteenth century globalisation visible as a way of understanding and bringing to life the nature of global inter-connections and its historical grounding.
This unique PhD will include funding to spend a semester abroad at the University of Saskatchewan
in Canada.
Aims and Objectives
To develop an evidence-based strategy for mobilising environmental history knowledge, enhancing its effectiveness in classrooms and museum exhibits, and bringing it to a broader public audience.
To build a Museum Without Walls using immersive technologies (virtual reality VR, augmented reality AR, mixed reality, XR) to explore historical connections and processes concerning the city of Manchester.
