What You Will Do:
Under general supervision, perform repair and maintenance of electronic patient care/monitoring and clinical engineering equipment, including safety testing, design, installation, calibration, routine maintenance of complex medical electronic equipment.
Principal Responsibilities and Tasks
The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this classification. They are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of all job duties performed by personnel so classified.
Performs preventive maintenance, repair and calibration services on complex electronic patient care, clinical laboratory research, computerized pneumatic conveying equipment and/or radiographic equipment in accordance with departmental standards and manufacturers operating and repair manuals.
Demonstrates proficiency in the use of specialized electronic/biomedical test equipment such as volt/ohm/ammeters, capacitance meters, power supplies, electrical safety analyzers, defibrillator and electrosurgical analyzers, and vacuum/pressure gauges/meters.
Interprets and performs inspection procedures appropriately and documents procedures properly in accordance with The Joint Commission regulations, and departmental policy and procedure
Performs regular manual and software tests, including electrical safety testing, of clinical engineering/radiological equipment for accuracy and efficiency of operation.
Identifies potential safety hazards of equipment, and documents actions taken to eliminate them.
Responds to work requests, daily, troubleshoots malfunctions and makes the necessary repairs in a timely and efficient manner to reduce the amount of down-time and to keep the department operating effectively.
Biomedical Engineering Technicians assigned to Diagnostic Imaging install, repair and maintain complex radiological equipment, such as, x-ray generators, film viewers, x-ray processors and loaders, and mobile x-ray equipment, including accessory equipment, such as, view lights, projectors, cine (movie) equipment, video and tape recorders.
Biomedical Engineering Technicians assigned to the central Clinical Engineering department install, repair and maintain complex diagnostic, therapeutic, laboratory, and biomedical research equipment and the electronic and mechanic components thereof.
Replaces defective components of any of the aforementioned equipment, such as, tubes, relays, capacitors, resistors, semi-conductors, timers, motors, and incandescent indicators/lamps, as needed, if determined to be irreparable.
Schedules third party repair of equipment when needs are beyond the scope of the department's abilities.
Technicians assigned to the central Clinical Engineering department, label equipment with operational status and date preventive maintenance was performed. Enters status data into the computer system as required.
Submits documentation of completed inspection, preventive maintenance and service reports to supervisor for quality control purposes.
Maintains test equipment and tools in good working order.
Recommends changes to, modifies and installs specialized electronic clinical engineering/radiological equipment.
Designs circuitry modifications, as needed, when components are discontinued or otherwise unavailable. May fabricate minor replacement parts from blueprints.
Communicates with nursing, allied health and medical staff, regularly, regarding equipment operation and problems to obtain information in order to resolve the problem and minimize the amount of down time
Contacts internal Patient Support Services Department or external vendors to arrange for repair of or order parts for equipment, as necessary.
May participate in the evaluation of new, rental or demonstration biomedical/radiological equipment and makes recommendations concerning acquisition.
Observes general clinical engineering practices and respective departmental policies and procedures to promote the overall efficiency of repair service and operations for Clinical Engineering, Diagnostic Imaging or the respective unit.
Assists with maintenance of departmental records, such as maintenance requests, electrical safety forms, files, relevant statistics and technical manuals on biomedical equipment in accordance with The Joint Commission, Federal, State and local regulations.
May assist Senior Biomedical Engineering Technicians or the supervisor with conducting in-service educational programs on use and operation of relevant clinical equipment.
What You Need to Be Successful:
Education and Experience
Associate's degree in Biomedical Engineering Technology, Electronics Technology,
or
a commensurate combination of education and experience, is required.
Two years of installation, testing, maintenance and repair of instrumentation, power supplies and electro/mechanical power transmission devices for clinical, biomedical or radiological equipment, or equivalent, is required.
