Senate Profile
The Washington State Legislature is a bicameral body comprised of the Senate and the House of Representatives. The Legislature meets annually on the second Monday in January in the Capitol Building in Olympia. Regular legislative sessions take place January through March in even-numbered years and January through April in odd-numbered years. Special legislative sessions occur as needed. Permanent staff work year-round supporting the Senate and legislative members. The Senate strives to cultivate an inclusive working environment that supports diversity through equitable policies and practices.
Background
The Washington State Senate seeks a collaborative, detail-oriented, and dynamic Civic Education Director. The ideal candidate will have a passion for the Legislature and be committed to civil discourse and public engagement in the legislative process. They will be curious, enjoy problem solving, and have sound moral and ethical judgment. The successful candidate will have the experience and skills to manage the civic education program including strong time-management, organizational and administrative skills, ability to manage multiple tasks, ability to be flexible and work well with others, strong public speaking and presentation skills, and supervisory experience.
The Senate hosts various nonpartisan civic education programs including the Washington State Legislative Internship Program, the Senate Page Program, Legislative Scholars Program,
Civic Education Day, and Legislators Back-to-School Program, which occur throughout the year and during the legislative session. The Civic Education Director is responsible for organizing and managing the Senate’s civic education programs, developing civic education content, managing other civic education staff, responding to public inquiries about civic education and the Legislature, and maintaining strong working relationships with other branches of government and organizations involved in civic education. From September through December and during legislative sessions, the majority of the Director’s time is spent managing the undergraduate Washington State Legislative Internship Program.

When the Legislature is not in session, remote work is permitted, and flexible schedule options are available. This position is nonpartisan, full-time, and exempt from civil service.
Position Responsibilities
Hire, train, and supervise the Senate Assistant Civic Education Director, Senate Page Program staff, Page School teachers, and Senate interns.
Work collaboratively with the House Director of Civic Education to supervise 60-70 undergraduate interns each legislative session, providing one-on-one mentorship, career counseling, and community building.
Recruit, interview, and select undergraduate legislative interns, including on-campus recruiting and interviewing at 20 Washington state universities annually. Foster positive working relationships with career centers, faculty, and advisors to ensure successful recruitment.
Maintain strong, collaborative relationships with Senate Administration, members, and staff, the House Civic Education Director, and partner organizations including state agencies and non-profits.
Develop and administer a session long civic education curriculum, training, and activity schedule for all interns, ensuring they develop a comprehensive knowledge of the legislative process and state government.
Maintain Civic Education program websites and social media profiles, including generating creative and engaging written and visual content for Facebook, Twitter, and other platforms as needed to promote programs.
Work directly and collaboratively with civic education-focused work groups and programs in Washington State and in other states.
Cultivate a learning environment that is intellectually stimulating and respectful.
Maintain websites and social media for various civic education programs, including developing content for Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and LinkedIn to advertise and promote programs.
Qualifications
Diverse backgrounds in education and experience could be successful in this role and will be considered. However, a background in the Legislature, civics, education, or a related field and demonstrated qualifications or experience in the following may be best suited for the position:
Ability to effectively interact with and manage others who have diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds, religious views, cultural backgrounds, socio-economic status, gender identity, sexual orientation, veteran status, and disability status to promote trust.
Thorough understanding of the legislative process and Washington State government.
Experience in working in a legislative environment, teaching, civic education, and/ or internship program coordination.
Experience recruiting, hiring, and managing a diverse workforce and implementing equitable, inclusive, and accessible policies and processes.
Ability to develop professional and productive relationships with all members of the legislative community, higher education institutions, and civic education partners.
Ability to work under pressure while simultaneously handling multiple responsibilities in a collaborative environment.
Possess excellent communication skills and excels at communicating in different formats with a broad range of people.
Self-directed, proactive, and able to work independently.
Experience working in a nonpartisan capacity.
Ability to maintain confidentiality.
Bachelor’s degree in Political Science, Education, Public Administration, or related field.
Salary Range
The salary range for this position is $75-133k, depending on experience and qualifications, although the expected hiring salary will typically be less than the top of the range.
