Minimum Qualifications
Doctorate degree in education-related field (or doctoral candidate with anticipated graduation no later than August 2022).
Two or more years of experience in research projects focusing on 3rd-12th graders' learning.
Experience with data collection, management, and analysis, as well as technical report writing.
Skills in operating common software, including Microsoft products.
Knowledge of research methods and practices in learning sciences.
Quantitative and/or mixed-methods research skills Willingness and capability to work as part of a team.
Effective time management and organizational skills.
Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Reporting to, and under the direction of the
GEAR
UP Assistant Director of Research and Evaluation, the
GEAR
UP Post-Doctoral Research Specialist
is responsible for coordinating the implementation of the research and evaluation components and activities of a $29 million, 7-year federal research grant awarded in September 2020 by the U.S. Department of Education. The grant is a continuation of a previous 7-year grant, resulting in a 13-year longitudinal study that aims to study the effectiveness of a comprehensive college access system that offers a variety of academic and supportive services to ~30,000 6th-12th graders and college students in western North Carolina.
Duties and responsibilities of the position include but are not limited to the following:
LEADERSHIP
Coordinate project-related research and evaluation activities including data collection, cleaning, and analysis, as well as archiving of data inflows.
Consult with our
GEAR
UP school coordinators to address challenges of data collection and research intervention, as well as to provide recommended solutions.
Consult with our
GEAR
UP school coordinators to provide analysis of problems and technical assistance in developing solutions for research activities.
Promote the best practices to achieve accuracy of data dissemination for reports and research.
Serve as the point of contact for and consult with district partners to collect data as well as secure the process of data inflow and outflow.
Co-develop short-term and long-term research strategies consistent with program research agendas.

MANAGEMENT
Collaborate across functional teams to ensure that data collection, cleaning, and management are efficient and effective.
Oversight and quality control of data inflows from school districts.
Evaluate operational effectiveness of the data collection and data analysis procedures to identify areas of strength and weakness.
Provide ongoing research-related training and support for new staff members regarding data security and management.
Ensure that updated research-related protocols and documentation are produced and available.
DATA
ANALYSIS
Use computer skills and analytical skills to ensure efficient and accurate data checking and analyzing processes.
Analyze data to regularly monitor the progress toward
GEAR
UP project goals by using statistical programs (
SPSS
SAS
, Mplus, or R).
Integrate data sources with business intelligence tools such as Tableau or similar.
Assess needs of program evaluation and research and recommend changes to improve efficiency and effectiveness of the project.
SUPPORT
DISSEMINATION
OF
RESEARCH
FINDINGS
Generate actionable insights and program-relevant recommendations from analysis.
Utilize research data to develop high quality and thorough literature review.
Develop reports related to the
GEAR
UP project (including technical reports and research briefs).
Support dissemination of research findings by editing and providing feedback on manuscript drafts.
OTHER
Attend regular evaluation team meetings.
Work with our research team to prepare manuscripts and presentations for journals and conferences.
Present findings at research conferences and institutes.
Perform other grant-related duties as requested.
