The W.A. Franke College of Forestry and Conservation at **MEMBERS ONLY**SIGN UP NOW***., Missoula seeks applicants for an Assistant Professor of Environmental Social Science. This is a nine-month, tenure-track position in the Department of Society and Conservation to begin August 2022 with duties allocated across research and scholarship, teaching, and service. We seek a colleague to join and expand a department of interdisciplinary social scientists dedicated to robust scholarly engagement and the delivery of social science education aimed at addressing our most pressing human-environment challenges. The candidate will teach courses in their area(s) of expertise to support our new, innovative, and interdisciplinary undergraduate major 'Environmental Science and Sustainability,' as well as teach and advise M.S. and Ph.D. students across several graduate degree options.
We welcome applications from individuals with diverse backgrounds, perspectives, and disciplinary training, including those from fields such as sociology, geography, psychology, political science, anthropology, and/or other social science disciplines and interdisciplinary fields. We seek candidates who are interested in engaging College colleagues in actively building diversity, equity, and inclusion into all facets of our work, including in research, teaching, and engagement. Our department values multiple approaches to social science inquiry, embraces interdisciplinary collaboration, and thus we seek candidates with methodological expertise across qualitative, quantitative, mixed, and/or novel approaches. We are interested in applicants with expertise in a wide array of subject areas, including but not limited to Indigenous studies, sustainability science, international conservation and development, human dimensions of natural resources, political ecology, environmental justice, other critical human-environment approaches, and/or research that engages stakeholders and underrepresented communities with social justice and equity implications.
Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be expected to (1) develop a vigorous, externally-funded program of research and scholarship; (2) teach an average of 9 credits (e.g., three, 3-credit courses) per academic year across the undergraduate major Environmental Science and Sustainability and College graduate programs (a greater emphasis on teaching is possible, depending on the preference of the successful candidate); (3) advise undergraduate students in the Environmental Science and Sustainability B.S. degree program; (4) supervise and support graduate student research and education at the M.S. and Ph.D. levels; and (5) contribute substantively to the Department, undergraduate and graduate degree programs, the College, the University, and the candidate’s broader professional field.
Academic and Professional Qualifications
The successful candidate must
possess:
a Ph.D. or equivalent terminal degree;
a strong record of research and scholarship in environmental social science;
a record of academic excellence in an environmental social science field;
experience teaching and a deep commitment to excellence in teaching;
demonstrated ability to effectively communicate in written and oral formats to diverse audiences, including students, professionals, and the general public; and
a demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion
Preference
will be given to applicants who have:
research expertise that complements the research and teaching expertise of other faculty in the Department;
interest and capacity to engage in interdisciplinary or transdisciplinary research, scholarship, or collaboration;
a record of facilitating community engagement and/or sustainability outcomes, including research that engages stakeholders and underrepresented communities with social justice and equity implications;
a demonstrated commitment to experiential learning;
a record of employing pedagogical techniques to accommodate diverse learning styles, student populations, and intellectual interests;
research and professional experience in diverse national and/or international settings
