Position Summary:
Loring Elementary School is looking for a School Adjustment Counselor.
The School Adjustment Counselor assists students with academic learning by providing clinical counseling to identify and address the social emotional challenges that may interfere with the educational process. Working with parents/guardians, school team members, and community-based resources, the school adjustment counselor implements strategies that promote positive school adjustment. Support services are provided to students and their families during psychiatric hospitalization or major crisis. The School Adjustment Counselor provides individual and group counseling and all aspects of case management for students both in and out of programs.
Key Duties & Responsibilities:
Provide short-term clinical support and crisis intervention counseling to students and families;
Facilitate communication amongst students, school team members, therapists, pediatricians, and other agency or clinical staff members;
Be a source of referral and resource information; a guide for mental health and substance abuse treatment;
Provide individual and group therapeutic counseling for a caseload of students both in and outside of programs;
Serve as a liaison between families and school;
Determine and implement appropriate therapeutic strategies to support behavioral and social interactions of students;
Provide parent/guardian education;
Collaborate with district social worker and other school system personnel in implementing strategies to promote student learning across school settings;
Participate as member of the IEP, IST, and/or other school-based teams
Serve on both school-based and system-wide committees to address educational issues, adjustment problems, safety issues, and program development for students;
Provide staff consultation and therapeutic direction on behavioral, emotional, and environmental issues affecting student participation in the learning process;
Conduct classroom meetings, psycho-educational social skills groups, and classroom presentations on identified areas of concern;
Maintain required clinical records and submit appropriate documents for statistical reports with adherence to program standards in school social work
Conduct home visits related to establishing communication and positive connections between the parent/guardian and school setting
Assist families in accessing community and state agencies;
Complete risk assessments on referred students;
Serve as liaison with community agencies and assist in fostering communication between schools, parents/guardians, and community leaders;
Locate and mobilize community resources to support the educational programming;
Attend meetings and professional development activities as required;
Perform other job related duties as assigned by the Principal, Director of Student Services or designee;

Job Requirements
Qualifications:
Master's degree
Satisfactory, supervised experience within the last five years as counselor, psychologist, intern, or apprentice in the area of guidance
Massachusetts LICSW licensure or LMHC. Will consider LCSW if eligible for LICSW
Hold a valid Massachusetts Teaching License as a School Social Worker/School Adjustment Counselor All Levels
Familiarity with laws and regulations pertaining to Special Education
Interest in helping high-risk teens in educational and clinical environments
Have strong leadership skills and experience working with adolescents in education, psychiatric, and residential care settings
Have flexibility, ability to think individually and systematically
Strong knowledge of school and community-based resources
Ability to work collaboratively within a team, strong negotiation and conflict resolution skills, and experience in providing intervention and treatment planning
Experience with diverse populations
Evidence of mastery of clinical competency and social case work techniques
Ability to understand the dynamics of families from various cultural backgrounds
Two years’ experience working with school-age children and their families
Familiarity in working with consultants, resource personnel, community groups, etc.
Ability to produce concise reports concerning relevant developmental, social, and medical information
Group work experience
Experience with trauma and mental health issues
At least 2 years of relevant experience preferred
Master degree preferred
Citizenship, residency or work VISA in United States required
