Our farms operate on 1,100 acres, housing beef and dairy cattle, poultry, sheep, swine, and horses, and turning grain and forage into feed and bedding for our animals. And our facilities don t stop at the boundary of our Urbana campus; we maintain and study herds at research and Extension centers throughout Illinois. \r\n\r\n\t \r\n\r\n\tThe primary research emphases at the Beef and Sheep Research Field Laboratory are applied nutrition genetics, physiology, lactation, production, and management. Eight cattle barns and one sheep barn house 1,000 beef cattle (800 feedlot cattle and about 200 purebred Angus) and 100 sheep. This state-of-the-art facility features a GrowSafe water intake and body weight monitoring system. It also includes a metabolism lab, and Ruminant Emissions Measurement System (REMS) that measures greenhouse gas production. \r\n\r\n\t \r\n\r\n\tThe facility hosts tours for visitors involved in the beef industry around the world and prospective students. For more information, visit ****DESCRIPTION SUMMARIZING POSITION:\r\n\r\n\t\r\n\t\t\r\n\t\t\t\r\n\t\t\t\t\r\n\t\t\t\t\tFull time 100% position will work closely with faculty conducting hands-on research, coordinating animal teaching, and facilitating animal production activities at the Beef and Sheep Field Laboratory in Urbana, IL.\r\n\t\t\t\r\n\t\t\r\n\t\r\n\r\n\r\n\t \r\n\r\n\tSPECIFIC DUTIES & RESPONSIBILIIES \r\n\r\n\t \r\n\r\n\t\r\n\t\tFacilitate research and educational needs of faculty, graduate students, and others at the Beef and Sheep Field Laboratory. \r\n\t\r\n\t\tProvide on-site management and supervision of the Beef and Sheep Field Laboratory.\r\n\t\r\n\t\tMaintain and support research protocol standards for required compliance procedures.\r\n\t\r\n\t\tCoordinate teaching laboratory sections at the unit.\r\n\t\r\n\t\tProvide day to day supervision of personnel including non-academic staff.\r\n\t\r\n\t\tMaintain fiscal responsibility at the facility including management of facility expenses, development of budgets and reports, recovery of teaching and research costs, and maintenance of accounting records for budgetary and compliance purposes.\r\n\t\r\n\t\tCollect, analyze, evaluate, and summarize empirical data including formulation of recommendations and implementation of improvements and planning to facilitate programmatic goals.  Design, develop, implement, integrate, and maintain research data collection systems for the unit.\r\n\t\r\n\t\tEstablish written research targets, develop Standard Operating Procedures, and enforce consistent research methodology associated with the unit.\r\n\t\r\n\t\tAid with on-going teaching and/or training in any areas of human resources, environmental management, safety, etc. which affect the on-going regulatory requirements of the unit.\r\n\t\r\n\t\tEstablish and maintain professional standards for facility appearance. Supervise maintenance of facilities to ensure competence and integrity of research efforts.\r\n\t\r\n\t\tCoordinate and facilitate procurement of commodities and resources necessary for optimal operations and maintenance of Beef and Sheep Unit Research facilities.\r\n\t\r\n\t\tOther duties as assigned to enhance the mission of the department.\r\n\r\n\r\n\t \r\n\r\n\tSome work will be required during evenings and/or weekends.  When working, the employee may be exposed to a variety of environmental factors to include, but not limited to, hot or cold weather, exposure to noise and allergens, and uneven ground.  In performing the functions of this position, the employee may be subjected to various mental and physical demands as well to include, but not limited to, independently traveling to and performing work at different locations, lifting and moving items that may frequently weigh up to seventy-five (75) pounds and occasionally weigh up to hundred and fifty (150) pounds, and twisting, pushing and pulling movements.  More detailed information regarding the functions of this position (including the physical, mental and environmental requirements of the position) may be obtained from Human Resources for the Department of Animal Sciences by contacting ****.   \r\n\r\n\t \r\n\r\n\t \r\n\r\n\tPOSITION REQUIREMENTS & QUALIFICATIONS\r\n\r\n\t \r\n\r\n\tEducation\r\n\r\n\t \r\n\r\n\tRequired:  B.S. degree in Animal Sciences or a related field.\r\n\r\n\t \r\n\r\n\tPreferred: M.S. degree in Animal Sciences or a related field.\r\n\r\n\t \r\n\r\n\tExperience\r\n\r\n\t \r\n\r\n\tRequired: 2 years of hands-on experience managing or working on a beef cattle operation.  Computer experience in record keeping and must be able to interpret and implement research protocols. \r\n\r\n\t \r\n\r\n\tPreferred:  Previous experience in managing a research farm.  Knowledge of and experience working with specific beef herd management computerized tools.
