Job Description:
APPOINTMENT: June 1, 2021
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Develop mathematical and computational models for materials processing and work with other researchers to design experiments to validate models
Conduct applied research and prepare reports related to advanced materials and manufacturing technologies, such as additive manufacturing
Write proposals for external funding in the development of advanced materials and manufacturing technologies
Publish research findings in technical journals
Operate and maintain advanced manufacturing equipment at the QCML
Supervise and train undergraduate students, technicians, and entry-level staff at the QCML
Other duties as assigned by the Director of QCML
Ability to teach courses in the WIU School of Engineering as required

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Masters Degree in Materials Science/Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field
U.S. citizenship/green card (to be able to access QCML on the Rock Island Arsenal)
Experience with computational modeling of materials, materials processing, or lattice-type structures
Relevant academic or professional work experience
Excellent verbal, written, and leadership skills
Be able to work effectively both independently and within a research group
Preferred Qualifications:
PhD in Materials Science/Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field
Publications in peer-reviewed technical journals
Experience with materials processing and modeling related to ballistic protection (armor)
Experience writing research proposals to agencies such as DOD, NSF, DOE, etc
Knowledge of metallographic specimen preparation, and analytical techniques such as XRD, SEM, and EBSD.
Experience with metal additive manufacturing processes, and other technologies at QCML
Ability to teach courses in the WIU School of Engineering

WIU-Macomb, IL: A traditional, residential four-year campus with distinctive undergraduate degrees and numerous graduate programs, including a doctorate in education, WIU-Macomb is located in the heart of west central Illinois in Macomb (population 20,000). Macomb is an Amtrak city with twice-daily service to Chicago.
WIU-Quad Cities: The only public university in the Quad Cities area, WIU-QC offers select undergraduate and graduate programs, including a doctorate in education and a doctorate in environmental studies, at its non-residential campus in Moline, IL (population 44,000).
WIU's Macomb campus is the educational, cultural and athletic center of the region. Annually, 12 major theatrical and dance productions and studio shows are performed, along with outstanding concerts, lectures, presentations, films, dance performances and more. The Gwendolyn Brooks and Casa Latina cultural centers offer programs and activities focusing on Black and Hispanic cultures, while the Women's Center promotes gender equity through education, support and advocacy. WIU's student organization for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer/questioning and ally (LGBTQ*A) community provides resources, support and programming. The University's athletics program, based on the Macomb campus, sponsors 17 NCAA Division I intercollegiate men's and women's varsity sports. Football competes in the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision through the Missouri Valley Football Conference; all other varsity sports compete at the Division I level through The Summit League.
