Communications Associate
The Center for Alternatives to Animal Testing (CAAT) is seeking a
Communications Associate
who will help plan, design, implement and manage its communications and content strategy across a variety of channels, primarily digital and web.
The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work in a challenging, fast-paced environment; to create and develop communications campaigns and materials; to influence the development CAAT's social media and web strategy; and to work with and learn from leaders in several different functional areas. The Communications Associate will also work closely with central communications as well as communications staff and functional managers in each of JHU's schools.

The successful candidate will be an important member of a team that will be provided with opportunities for professional development and growth. In addition, the Communications Associate eventually may have the opportunity to manage a communications specialist as the team grows.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:
Oversee the planning and development of communications campaigns, materials and related content to support CAAT's mission. Examples include educational guides, information on key dates and deadlines, workshop reports, reminders, updates, social media posts (e.g. Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube, etc.) and more.
Manage the communications strategy and planning for CAAT in partnership with internal colleagues and other divisions across the university.
Partner with colleagues to manage CAAT's and Evidence-based Toxicology Collaboration's (EBTC's) websites and knowledgebase (information repository with information on policies and processes and answers to common questions asked by stakeholders).
Develop and maintain a communications calendar, ensuring that communications activities are coordinated across functional areas and have consistent messaging, including formatting, design, style and mission.
Implement and oversee the review process for all communications coming from CAAT, assisting with writing, and editing as needed.
Ensure messaging follows established university and divisional guidelines and is uniform, cohesive, integrated, personalized to target audience, and aligned with institutional objectives.
Participate in the planning, development, and distribution of targeted email and social media communications; manage audience distribution lists.
Coordinate with designers, printers, and other vendors as needed.
Track metrics and solicit feedback on communications campaigns/materials to ensure continuous improvement.
Create and share reports/updates with leadership via either written or verbal presentations.
Leverage data from in-person visits, e-mail inquiries and phone calls to inform communication decisions.

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):
Bachelor's Degree in related field.
4 years related experience in communications, marketing, or a related field.
Advanced degree may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.*
JHU Equivalency Formula:
18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.
** Applicants who do not meet the posted requirements but are completing their final academic semester/quarter will be considered eligible for employment and may be asked to provide additional information confirming their academic completion date.
Preferred Qualifications:
Master's Degree preferred.
Experience in a higher education setting.
Social media experience.
Previous experience with creating scientific content.
Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to write clear, concise copy for digital and print media, strong editing, and proofreading skills.
Solid understanding of principles of design, layout, and brand identity; demonstrated experience working within established brand standards.
Excellent interpersonal skills, and the ability to work collaboratively with multiple groups, including students, staff, and administrators.
Strong project management and collaboration skills; ability to work closely with colleagues from different functional areas.
Demonstrated knowledge of Microsoft applications (e.g., Word, PowerPoint, Excel) and other communications/social media tools.
Experience using content management systems (e.g., WordPress) and email marketing platforms; familiarity with HTML/CSS.
Understanding of measurement tools (e.g., Google Analytics) and how to translate data insights into action.
Superior attention to detail; ability to think creatively, strategically, and analytically.
Ability to work effectively under deadlines and simultaneously juggle several assignments.
Understanding of today's digital landscape, including new and emerging technologies
Flexibility in dealing with diverse cultures, and commitment to diversity and to serving the needs of a diverse population.
Technical Qualifications or Specialized Certifications:
Proficient with the Adobe Creative Cloud (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, etc.) and related tools.
Familiar with web accessibility standards and best practices for usability, navigation, content styling and presentation, and search engine optimization.

Starting Salary Range: $59,870 - $82,250 annually (commensurate with experience)

Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
