Minimum Qualifications
Nurse Practitioner: Licensed as a Registered Nurse by the North Carolina Board of Nursing, graduation from a Nurse Practitioner program approved by the North Carolina Joint Subcommittee of the Board of Nursing and Board of Medical Examiners, and approved to practice medical acts by the Joint Subcommittee; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Physician Assistant: Graduation and or completion of an educational program for Physician Assistants accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs and an active Physician Assistant License issued by the North Carolina Board of Medical Examiners.
Essential Job Functions
The primary role of the Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner
is to provide student-focused mental health and medical care through assessment skills and clear communication with students and as appropriate their families, colleagues and referred specialists. Responsible for coordinating appropriate clinical evaluations and referrals and consultations as needed. Performs appropriate diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, maintains an accurate medical record, develops care plans and counsels students..  
Other duties of the position include:   Administer to the mental health needs of
ASU
students. Assess and diagnose students, provide psychotherapy and prescribe medication. Treat students with diagnosed disorders, as well as those with family histories or other factors that increase the likelihood of potential mental illness. Educate and inform students and as appropriate their families, about mental health issues and steps they can take to boost their care. 
Diagnose and treat conditions such as anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, or substance abuse. 
Assist students who struggle with grief, anger, adjustment issues or other conditions; Diagnostic steps for these problems include recording a patient's verbal history, performing a physical exam and ordering diagnostic tests. 
Develops and manages a treatment plan, prescribe medication and administer psychotherapy as necessary. 
Treat patients one-on-one or in group settings with family members or other patients. 
Provide medical care under the supervision of the attending physicians to students in the Mary S. Shook Student Health Service which entails: 
Obtaining a detailed patient history and performing an appropriate directed physical examination; ordering and interpreting appropriate laboratory, radiographic, and
EKG
studies; making an appropriate diagnosis; and ordering appropriate therapy; including physical therapy, nutritional management, pharmaceutical agents, self-care techniques, and referrals to other appropriate sources of care; and maintaining accurate medical information on the patients' chart.   Coordinate and monitor the
CQI
and accreditation programs at the Student Health Service. 
Initiate quality studies in all areas of the health service, coordinate committee, and departmental activities, evaluate
CQI
activities, coordinate accreditation activities, plan staff development programs, prepare monthly statistical reports, and assist with decisions that affect the delivery of health care in the student health service.   Work with other agencies on campus in the promotion of health and care of students. Provide health education to individuals or to groups on campus in order to promote optimal health and prevent future illness. 
Assist in providing medical supervision and care for intercollegiate and intramural athletic teams. 
Assess and diagnose students, provide psychotherapy, prescribing and monitoring medication. 
Treat students with diagnosed disorders, as well as those with family histories or other factors that increase the likelihood of potential mental illness. 
Educate and inform students and as appropriate their families, about mental health issues and steps they can take to boost their care. 
Accept other assignments as delegated by the Director of the Mary S. Shook Student Health Service.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Required for this Position
Accuracy in all areas of health care is essential.

Ability to actively listen. 
Ability to answer questions from healthcare personnel and patients on disease processes, diagnosis, and treatment. 
Ability to coordinate referrals to specialists. 
Working knowledge of patient care practices and held accountable for the continuous and comprehensive management of a broad range of personal health services for which the nurse practitioner/physician assistant is educationally prepared and for which competency has been maintained. 
These services include but are not restricted to: 
(1) promotion and maintenance of health; 
(2) prevention of illness and disability; 
(3) diagnosing, treating and managing acute and chronic illnesses; 
(4) guidance and counseling for both individuals and families; 
(5) prescribing, administering and dispensing therapeutic measures, 
tests, procedures, and drugs; 
(6) planning for situations beyond their expertise and consulting with 
and referring to other health care providers as appropriate; and 
(7) evaluating health outcomes.
