California State Polytechnic University, Pomona invites applications for a Faculty Director position in the Kellogg Honors College (KHC). Cal Poly Pomona is one of two polytechnic universities in the 23-campus California State University system and among 11 such institutions nationwide. Since its founding in 1938, Cal Poly Pomona students participate in an integrative experiential learning education that is inclusive, relevant, and values diverse perspectives and experiences. With a variety of degree programs in the arts, humanities, sciences, engineering, and professional disciplines, the university is well known for its learn-by-doing approach and Teacher Scholar Model.
The university is noted for its scenic and historic 1,400-acre campus, which was once the winter ranch of cereal magnate W.K. Kellogg. We acknowledge that Cal Poly Pomona resides on the territorial and homelands of the Tongva and Tataavium people who are the traditional land caretakers of Tovaangar. The university's nearly 30,000 students are taught and mentored by the campus's more than 1,400 faculty as part of 54 baccalaureate and 29 master's degree programs, 11 credential and certificate programs, and a doctorate in educational leadership.

The Cal Poly Pomona campus is located less than 30 miles east of downtown Los Angeles at the intersection of Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino counties. Student Population. California residents comprise the majority (96%) of applicants to undergraduate programs at Cal Poly Pomona - nearly half (49%) of new students were transfers in Fall 2020. Fifty-eight percent of Cal Poly Pomona students are first generation, 70% receive financial aid, and 44% qualify as Pell-eligible. The university enrolls a diverse student body that identifies as 49% Latinx, 21% Asian, 15% White, 3% Black, 5% International 3% two or more races, 3% unknown, less than 1% Native Hawaiian or Native Pacific Islander, and less than 1%
Native American Indigenous. Thirty-nine percent of the student body were STEM majors. The top enrolled programs include psychology, mechanical engineering, civil engineering, biology, and computer science.
Inclusive Excellence Criteria. We aspire to be the model inclusive polytechnic university in the nation. We have a strong commitment to inclusive excellence and to educational experiences that leverage the diverse perspectives and experiences needed to succeed and thrive in a diverse society.
Tenure track faculty hires will demonstrate a commitment and record of contributions through their teaching, scholarship, or service to these inclusive excellence criteria (a minimum of two must be addressed in the Student Success Statement):
1. Integrates the values of equity and inclusivity into their teaching, scholarship and/or service contributions with diverse student populations;
2. Incorporates the contributions and struggles of historic ethnic minority groups and communities into their teaching, scholarly work, and/or service contributions;
3. Adopts teaching strategies that supports the learning and success of students from diverse student populations;
4. Mentors and engages diverse student populations in discovery, scholarship, and creative activities;
5. Engages students in problem-based projects and learning that address the needs of diverse communities;
6. Possesses knowledge of challenges and barriers for underrepresented students and faculty within the discipline;
7. Mentors and assists diverse student populations interested in pursuing graduate education;
8. Engages in community-responsive action research or service with diverse student populations and communities;
9. Has experience in or demonstrates a commitment to adopting experiential learning activities and pedagogy with diverse student populations and communities; and
10. Has expertise in or demonstrated commitment to teaching, scholarship and/or service that contributes to access, diversity, and equal opportunity in higher education.
The Office of Academic Innovation (AI), a part of the Office of Student Success, Equity, and Innovation in the Division of Academic Affairs, has as its primary goal to foster and advance a culture of innovation in teaching and learning at Cal Poly Pomona. AI curates experiential learning opportunities for the campus community and is responsible for the strategic, tactical, and operational oversight of the Center for Community Engagement, the Kellogg Honors College, the Student Innovation Idea Lab, the Office of Undergraduate Research, the Learn Through Discovery Initiative, NSF CPP I-Corps site program, the Digital Credentialling and Badging Initiative, and present and future institutional-level innovation initiatives. Academic Innovation is responsible for advancing and promoting a vision of innovative education in support of the Cal Poly Pomona strategic plan and academic master plan; guiding faculty and staff development in knowledge and skills necessary for advancing a culture of innovation in learning; assuring the quality of activities under Academic Innovation through assessment and other evidence-based decision-making practices; and seeking external funding opportunities that will support a culture of innovation in teaching and learning.
Kellogg Honors College (KHC) at Cal Poly Pomona was founded in 2003 as the Honors Program and was renamed the Kellogg Honors College in 2005 after a generous donation by Jean Kellogg. The KHC has grown from an inaugural student cohort of 26 students to 350 students. The KHC supports Cal Poly Pomona's educational mission through curricula, programs and services that promote student learning, support the intellectual curiosity, aspiration to succeed, passion, openness, and determination of honors students, while fostering an inclusive and vibrant honors community. The mission of the KHC is to cultivate students' many forms of talent in an academically enriching environment within an inclusive and nurturing community. We motivate and prepare intellectually curious, civically engaged, lifelong learners. The KHC collaborates very closely with Academic colleges and departments to coordinate curriculum development for the program, determine and schedule honors courses, and identify faculty to teach those courses. The KHC works in partnership with the many CPP offices including Admissions, Recruitment and Outreach, Orientation Services and Scheduling.
Qualifications. The Kellogg Honors College at Cal Poly Pomona is seeking a proven leader focused on student engagement and success. The Faculty Director (Director) of the Kellogg Honors College is a full-time, 12-month appointment. The Director must provide exceptional leadership through:
• a strong understanding of the priorities for student success;
• demonstrated strength utilizing equity-based models in recruiting and serving a highly diverse cohort of honors students;
• and the ability to author and advance a vision of an honors program that is clearly aligned with the goals of an inclusive polytechnic education with opportunities for experiential learning, creativity, and discovery.
The Director will work closely with the AVP for Academic Innovation to provide leadership, vision, and administrative direction for an inclusive honors program serving an increasingly diverse student population of approximately 29,000 students. The ideal candidate will be experienced, creative, compassionate, with proven leadership and operational skills in running an honors program. Highly desirable qualities include knowledge of and dedication towards best practices in honors education, as well as a demonstrated ability to implement a vision of an inclusive and equitable honors education.
Responsibilities of the Director
• Providing strategic vision and central coordination for the Honors program;
• Serving as an ex-officio member on the Honors Program Advisory Board;
• Developing and creating recruitment and retention strategies aimed at generating highly diverse honors students reflective of the Cal Poly Pomona student body;
• Creating and maintaining an inclusive honors program based on principles of equity including in curriculum development and honors programing;
• Coordinating curriculum development for the program in consultation with the Advisory Board, Deans, Departments Chairpersons, College and University Curriculum Committees, and the Academic Senate, including building an honors core curriculum;
• Providing guidance and support to departments on the preparation of honors course outlines and working closely with them to identify faculty members to teach these courses;
• Coordinating and collaborating with academic departments to identify and develop an honors faculty and providing faculty development opportunities;
• Developing and implementing an assessment plan for the Honors Program;
• Working closely with the division of University Advancement to actively seek sources for private support and with the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs to seek external funding through grants and contracts;
• Maintaining communication with the Academic Senate, the Advisory Board, the Deans, and the Associate Provost for Student Success, Equity, and Innovation to develop a plan for institutionalization of the program, including articulating fiscal and resource needs;
• Strengthening linkages with feeder schools and community colleges and getting directly involved with outreach, recruitment, and retention of a diverse honors student body; and
• Establishing linkages with similar programs across the CSU and on the national level and acting as a point of ****.
