Department of Computer Science
at the **MEMBERS ONLY**SIGN UP NOW***., one of the UK’s leading universities.
As a part of a large interdisciplinary team you will develop a novel point-of-care detection technology for the Class B drugs, synthetic cannabinoid receptor agonists (SCRAs; more commonly Spice). These drugs are endemic in the homeless community and the prison system. The detection technology will decrease the flow of drugs and support vulnerable users as part of a harm reduction strategy. The technology is built on a fluorescence spectral fingerprinting approach developed in our labs, DOI: 10.1039/c9ay00722a and
****The project is a true collaborative effort as part of a large (£1.3m) EPSRC grant, involving an interdisciplinary team of researchers from biochemistry, pharmacology, community pharmacy, physics, analytical chemistry, psychology and computer science.
Your role will be to develop the analytical toolkit for detecting Spice from fluorescence spectral data and to interface with other researchers in the team to deliver the point-of-care technology. The role will involve utilising machine learning to detect SCRA fluorescence signatures and providing confidence measures for decision making. In addition, you will explore the use of generative models to tackle novel SCRAs as they arise. You will also need software engineering skills for real world deployment. You will collaborate with police forces, charities, and drug testing facilities.
You will have a PhD in Computational Science, Mathematics, Physics or a related discipline, ideally with experience of machine learning and complex data set analysis. They will be able to interact effectively with scientists from other disciplines as well as external stakeholders. Good programming skills are essential.
This is a fixed-term position for 18 months.
For an informal discussion about the role please contact Dr Tom Haines ( ****
