Project description
Would you like to be part of a budding revolution in the Urban Air Mobility sector? Would you like to be the first in the UK and one of the few in the world to help improve the aerodynamic performance of a propulsion concept that is still in its infancy? Here’s your chance to join one of the leading departments in aeronautical research in the UK! A 3.5 year fully-funded PhD position is now available for working on the aerodynamics of cyclorotor configurations at the **MEMBERS ONLY**SIGN UP NOW***..
A cyclorotor is a rotating-wing system, consisting of a set of pitching blades that rotate about a horizontal axis parallel to their leading edge. This offers a high level of manoeuvrability and is extremely suitable for applications that require sustained hovering and thrust-vectoring capabilities. Cyclorotors are currently being tested on different scales – from nano and micro air vehicles to larger scale aircraft that caters to the rising interest in the Urban Air Mobility sector in the form of air-taxis. With relatively little optimisation so far, cyclorotors already perform on par or better than traditional propellers at small scales. However, we have very little understanding of the flow physics, and we need this to further optimise their performance.
The flow around a cyclorotor is characterised by nonlinear and unsteady phenomena resulting from high amplitude pitch kinematics and intricate fluid-structure interactions. The broad scope of this study is to systematically map the unsteady aerodynamic phenomena underlying the cyclical motion of a set of blades using particle image velocimetry and direct force measurements. The experiments and data analysis will be extremely relevant to a diverse range of unsteady flows with applications in vertical axis wind turbines, bio-inspired flight/ swimming, and general fluid-structure interaction problems.
Motivated candidates with knowledge/interest in aerodynamics, design, experimentation, and data analysis are encouraged to apply. Any experience with robotics and particle image velocimetry would be beneficial.
This project will enhance your skills in motion control, building rigorous experimental set-ups, coding (image/ signal processing), scientific planning, writing, and presentation (international exposure) amongst others. You will have access to training in general manufacturing skills in our extensive workshops. You will have the opportunity to work with a vibrant cohort of PhDs and postdocs who will be a part of your network.
If you wish to discuss any details of the project informally, please contact Dr. Swathi Krishna, Aerodynamics and Flight Mechanics Research Group, Email: ****,
