The **MEMBERS ONLY**SIGN UP NOW***. Department of Biological Sciences seesk a highly motivated Microbiology Research Assistant beginning, September 15, 2022 or until filled. This position supports the day-to-day microbiology research in a grant-funded project.
Founded in 1868, **MEMBERS ONLY**SIGN UP NOW***. is a leading historically black university (HBCU) located on the Virginia Peninsula in the City of Hampton. It is a privately endowed, co-educational, nonsectarian institution. The Department of Biological Sciences offers bachelor's in science and Masters in Sciences degree programs.
Duties and Responsibilities
Perform microbiological techniques, including culturing, streaking, and membrane filtration
DNA and RNA extraction from various samples (microbial cultures, water, etc.) for downstream PCR analysis and sequencing. Troubleshooting in lab techniques.
Identify micro-organisms through the use of selective media, chromogenic indicators, and morphology
Collect and analyze experimental data
Conduct literature searches
Prepare media/Reagents
Maintain lab (including washing and autoclaving)
A successful candidate:
Has the ability to meet timelines
Is detailed-oriented, organized, and reliable.
Has excellent time management skills
Has excellent communication skills with colleagues and supervisors through oral updates, written reports, and technical presentations at the meetings
Is willing to travel to scientific meetings and/or for summer research in Maine or Massachusetts
Qualifications
B.S. with 1-2 years of experience in a research laboratory or a Master’s degree in Microbiology, Biology, or other related fields
Must have a working knowledge of sterile techniques and laboratory skills
Ability to work well both in a team as well as independently with little supervision on assigned research projects
Basic knowledge of Microsoft-based computer programs and knowledge of scientific, graphic, and statistical software (e.g., Graphpad Prism) is preferred.
